This work examines, from a viewpoint of intellectual history, the particular links between historiography and philosophy prior to the “narrativist turn”. For this purpose, as much as pragmatic contexts of analysis are concerned, the foremost philosophical and historiographical debates, taken place between the 1890s and the 1960s, have been chosen, scenarios in which the epistemic matrices, shaping the so-called “historiographical operation”, are discussed. By identifying the main nuclear topics, it is possible to access the primitive foundations of the theory of history. In this way, the study of the debates makes it possible to exorcise the myths of singularity and illuminate the circulation of ideas, the mechanisms of reception, and the diversity of semantic fields. The objective of this article is to examine the scope and limits of Western historiographical projects in their tensions regarding philosophy. Without ignoring the philosophical poverty of historical science in its beginnings, unsuspected interstices can be highlighted through this search.

This article delves into the complex relationship of power in ancient Rome with history and memory from the damnatio memoriae viewpoint. To this purpose, we shall first aim to undo the current misunderstandings that identify damnatio memoriae with a simple will to suppress memory. We examine the different uses of these condemnations of memory, but also their limitations, the numerous rehabilitations and, finally, the recycling of many of the statues of the condemned. The overall objective is to show how damnatio memoriae was never a single or homogeneous reality, but rather a modern category that refers to a plurality of related but often unlike practices that help to understand the intricate relationship between power, history, and memory in ancient Rome.

A significant element of activity of Radio Free Europe (RFE) were broadcasts of educational character, reminding, especially young generation behind the “iron curtain”, of Polish political history and the development of Polish culture. During the celebration of “Polish Millennium” (1960-1966), the editorial board of RFE played an important role in popularizing a thousand-year-old history of the nation, Christianity and Polish country. Many of the lectures addressed to the society of communist Poland were of up-to-date significance. In that way, the RFE editors opened the “gate to the West”, closed by the communist authorities. Many events from Poland’s 1000-year history were interpreted in an anti-communist spirit, exposing the significant role of the Catholic Church.

The magical-religious system of Voodoo in Haiti has had a formation process in the last two centuries crystallized in a synthesis, generally interpreted according to the knowledge on the theme of one author or another, at a specific moment or another of his evolution. The influences of Africa, Europe, and the own developments taken place in Haiti, require analysis to clarify what is the current Voodoo and how it has become what it is. It is a religion organized in each cult center, without superior structures but the temples, which have their own peculiarities, respect a general regulation (règleman) that can be studied as the basis of the entire system. Here we deal with some of these aspects, important to understand a phenomenon that extends beyond the limits of Haiti, and that also permeates Voodoo in Louisiana.
