This article aims to contribute to the understanding of the decision-making processes in the management of public policies regarding assistance to victims of violence due to armed conflict and peace construction in Cauca (Colombia). It corresponds to a qualitative case study (the findings might not allow for generalization) in which information was gathered from two scenarios through observation, individual interviews and documentary review. The scenarios were influenced by the environment, facilitated the development of trust, were constituted in environments of learning, interaction, relationship exchange and governance. Nevertheless, strong hegemonic leadership persists, center-periphery logic remains predominant, and normative knowledge surpasses other knowledge. Synergies and research support are required to strengthen local public management.

It is common for academics working in territories rich in hydrocarbons to face an ethical dilemma: wheter or not to receive or not economic support from the energy industry. In this work, this paper studies and develops this predicament and argues that, although it is the safest, the least favorable position is to remain as outside observers. Academia sector must participate in innovation with its long-term vision, and not only during crises and emergency situations, which is usually when its credibility is eroded. Researchers ought to plan their participation as a conscious and ethically considered risk, basing their work is based on the basic precepts of legality and independence, and always aligning their positions with certainty, impartiality, objectivity, and transparency. These values are all related and should not be ignored. In a scenario such as the Energy Reform in Mexico, all actors must play their role so that there are counterweights, and Academia musts accept the challenge and take on a more proactive role. The less it knows, the more research it needs to conduct.

In the context of a political system in which democracy is undergoing a process of crisis of representation and depoliticization, coexisting experiences of indigenous communities in resistance offer different ways of understanding communal life in Mexico. By means of a theoretical study this paper analyzes the relationship between the political of democracy and communality. It discusses the notion of solidary power, derived from indigenous communal authority, as a central idea of a concept of non-hierarchical but mandatory and collective power. The relationship between different epistemologies contributes to a necessary advancement of the theory of democracy and radical democracy and emphasizes the need for theoretical intercultural dialogues on community and the political.

This article aims to analyze the moral repertoires that agents of different class positions use to legitimize and challenge social inequality in Gran Córdoba, Argentina. To do so, it recovers both the stories of the agents trajectories and their valuations over access to economic and labor resources. It also explores the ambivalence of those logics and their translation into practical senses of symbolic distinction. The data of this research were obtained using a combination of methodologies of multivariate statistical processing —for the reconstruction of the social structure of Cordoba and qualitative methodologies (in-depth interviews and ethnographic records between 2012 and 2015).

Education is a merit good and, at the same time, a meritocratic good. The aim of any educational system is to lead the transition between these two dimensions. The purpose this article is to show that when society is very heterogeneous, this task fails. To prove it, Mexico’s case is examined, because its political system has exhibited the need to maintain an equilibrium among modern, premodern, and postmodern actors to guarantee the success on facing the governability-democracy dilemma. The solution has been the permanent divorce between formal and informal institutions. The main conclusion is that this divorce has encouraged the shutting down of any modern attempt to encourage knowledge through education, because it allows the use of informal mechanisms that enjoy a high degree of legitimacy, due to the pre- and post-modern components of the social equilibrium.

This article seeks to analyze the different approaches that Brazil and Colombia have had to date on the geostrategic importance of the South Atlantic, emphasizing the differences that the ocean has had for its respective conception of country and its insertion in the South American region. For these purposes I focus on three variables; development, defense and regional security, in order to assess the importance of the South Atlantic and the influence in these two nations’ strategic environment. I argue and conclude that while Brazil seeks leadership in South America through an emphasis on its role as promoter of an integral autonomizing conception for the South Atlantic that articulates development, defense and regional security, Colombia in turn prioritizes its role in the region as a reference in the fight against transnational crime, positioning itself as a Middle Oceanic Power.

This article analyzes the role of music in the political formation of a unique character in the daily life of unam: the radical leftist activist student, characterized by their rebellion against the government, the state and capitalism. This research is theoretically based on the concepts of political culture and political formation and has a qualitative approach using life stories of 12 activist students from two unam schools. The favorite musical genres of the interviewees are rock, ska, reggae and trova. Music plays a fundamental role in the processes of identification amongst the group and with the causes of their struggle, and it is a process of symbolic exchange fundamental in the construction of its political culture.

This article aims to analyze the differences and convergences between critical theory, especially the work of Habermas, and decolonial thinking as paradigms that seek to construct an emancipatory political project based on their ontological, epistemological and methodological assumptions, as well as nature of the political proposals that both currents of thought have sustained and sustain. From this review, the convergences between the most recent generation of critical theory and the decolonial turn and the possibility of constructing a dialogue in symmetrical conditions are pointed out, recognizing the importance of valuing other knowledge of the decolonial turn, but also of the institutional pillars that sustain the existence of a critical social science.

The participative structure of two governmental Mexican conservation programs was analyzed. We evaluated the co-management networks and collective action using social network analysis, presence-absence analysis and content analysis, based on semi-structured interviews. Both networks are decentralized, in which the support of different participation groups is a key to accomplish the activities of each program. These groups are more involved in scientific research. Stakeholders that work together with the government through common projects are represented as leaders, but they may follow their own objectives and interests, which can negatively affect the coordination among other stakeholders. Barriers to participation are the funding limitation from federal government and the project internal rules, which affect the access to new participants in the networks.
