This article analyzes the conditions in which third world migrants are arriving to world cities. By analyzing the case of the mexicans in the east harlem as new immigrants to New York City, the article questions how urban policies and the demand for prime urban space, as a result of macroestructural transformations, mainly, globalization, changes in labor markets, and life style in world cities are pushing new immigrants to live and settled down in inner city areas with high levels of urban decline, poverty, population change, and abandonment.

The paper examines the patterns of morbidity and utilization of health care services among population aged 60 and older in Mexico, and compares the determinants of use of services between this population and the population of ages 15 to 59 years old. The empirical analysis uses data from the National Health Survey II - 1994 (Encuesta Nacional de Salud II). The results show that compared to the population aged 15-59, the older population reports worse health, and greater prevalence of acute, chronic illnesses, and disability. The utilization of health care services, however, is low and similar for both age groups. The multivariate analyses on use of services show that the population in Mexico is sensitive to the severity of the illness and to the relative cost of treatment, and this holds for both age groups.

Based in the results of a survey to 461 persons of 60 and over in the metropolitan area of Monterrey, Mexico, this study explored the extent and nature of the relationship of the elderly with their support networks -formal and informal-, as well as the factors determining such relationship. To begin, the results suggest a panorama of high economic and social dependency resulting from low income and poor health conditions. On the one hand, we observed that the institutional system provided principally access to health services and retirement income, though the coverage of pensions was restricted and differentiated. On the other hand, the study demonstrated thatfamily, but especially children, play a central role in the subsistence of the elderly transferring goods and services not supplied by the formal support system.

The important thing in the use of the functions of these characteristics is that they let work in a group of continuous values, although it pass from discret (the group of quinquenal ages) to a group of continuous ages, that avoid the use of alternative methods to do esteeimations of the migration rate in levels more disaggregated than the group of quinquenal.
