This article’s main aim is to catalogueand order the whole amount of collaborations of Spanish and Latin American poets who published their works in the Catalan magazine Quaderns de poesia. At the same time we analyze the magazine’s evolution and the links between its editors and all these poets. Through a close comparison, we intend to prove that the Spanish and Latin American poems from Quaderns written by Salinas, García Lorca, Juan Ramón, Gabriela Mistral, Altolaguirre y Moreno Villa were firstly published in the magazine from Barcelona.

Our study aims to investigate the presence of this motif of the ancient and medieval literature –the opposition between fortitudo and sapientia– in some important works of the Spanish epic poetry (Latin and vernacular) and in some medieval Hispano-Latin chronicles. We apply the concepts of ‘topic’ and ‘antitopic’ to this pair of terms (sapiens victor and victus sapiens, respectively) and we try to illustrate the literary functioning of both figures through some examples from the analyzed corpus. We try to show that the primary opposition between the selected virtues works yet, with only small variations, in the medieval treatments of the question and, very particularly, in the Cidian examples (which probably were then more numerous than we can guess today).

As a contribution to the history of Spanish punctuation and to the graphematic perspective in the study of historical phraseology, we analyze the punctuation of sayings in the printed edition of five repertoires of the 16th and 17th centuries. Starting from the bases of Spanish metrics and a linguistic theory of punctuation, our objectives are: to assess whether punctuation marks correspond or not to pauses of orality and to verify the evolution of the graphic treatment given to the conjunction e/y. We will argue in favor of the existence of autonomous punctuation marks, not linked to prosody, that refute the myth of the supposed “orality” or respiratory and prosodic value of punctuation before academic standardization. Sources: Proverbios (1500) and Refranes que dizen las viejas (1522) of the Marqués de Santillana, Refranes glosados (1524) and Refranes of Núñez de Toledo (1555 y 1621).

Common nouns and proper nouns have different ways of signifying. Common nouns signify semantically –they have intension–, while proper nouns signify onymically. Properhood consists of identifying for the interlocutor an entity that bears a certain name. Even though all proper nouns have this onymic way of signifying, only some of them refer. There are modified proper nouns that, while their meaning may be explained only by the identification of one particular entity (for example, Miley Cyrus in X does a Miley Cyrus), they are not expressions that refer. In addition, there are verbs with properhood (for example, madrileñear –‘to do the special thing the people of Madrid do’–) which obviously lack reference. In short, nouns with properhood identify, but they do not necessarily refer.

In the context of migration and globalization of the Hispanic culture, and through it, of the most persistent myths and topics of European civilization, we find the work of the mestizo asunceno Ruy Díaz de Guzmán Irala. The inclusion of the topic of the reverent and grateful lion will undergo a process of transculturation in the new Hispanic space and will be adapted to the historical circumstances, in which the confrontation with the other –represented by the indigenous people– reigns. We will compare the Hispanic-American text with El libro de los ejemplos by Clemente Sánchez de Vercial and Corónica del Çid Ruy Díaz, among others. The recontextualization of this topic in the Argentine pampas will serve as a means to exalt the Spanish feat in the Río de la Plata area and the reintegration in the new geographic and social space will enable the depiction of a dichotomic vision (civilization and barbarism) imbued with a continuous tension.

The Augustinian friar Fernando de Valverde’s sacred poem, Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Copacabana del Perú, is a composition dedicated to the Virgin of Copacabana that has received little critical attention and is thus less well known than other contemporary poetic works, such as those written by Alonso Ramos Gavilán or Antonio de la Calancha. It is a rather special poem not only because it includes, in its early pages, the first signed engraving from vice-royal Peru, but also because of the hybrid nature of its composition. The present work seeks to set out some characteristics that allow us to identify bucolic and epic elements that can be found in this religious poem.

The study of the geographic perspective of La Araucana, in connection with the visions of nature, is a subject analyzed in critical works from different angles. Whether focusing on geographic data transmuted into epic geographies, or focusing on the well-known duality in the poetizations of nature (paradisiacal or infernal), these studies envision the spatial and ideological procedures with which La Araucana stands as a paradigmatic work for the construction of the literary geography born in the texts about discovery. This article realizes a new development of this vision with the relevant complement provided by the “Geographic Index” created by José Toribio Medina in his “Centennial Edition”, in which it is evident that Ercilla named the most diverse places on the planet so that Chile, “in the famous Antarctic region”, was appearing on the world map that the index draws.

This article studies the relationship between an anonymous epic satirical poem, La victoria naval peruntina, attributed to Mateo Rosas de Oquendo, and the heroic poem Arauco domado by Pedro de Oña. It contextualizes the historical substance of both poems in the beginning of the maritime war against privateers in the Pacific Ocean. Then focusing on the intertextual and controversial connexions the satire established with Oña’s poem. This analysis leads to consider the dialogue between satire and epic poetry, thanks to Pascal Debailly’s works, and to examine how the privateer character offers narrative and moral potentialities in order to criticize viceregal elites. The satirical anger reveals the complexity and heterogeneity of the colonial discourse using the privateers raids as a polemical question.

The Elegías de varones ilustres de Indias (1589) by Juan de Castellanos are closely related to the contemporary Economy of Mercedes: a system in which deserving individuals (beneméritos) in the Americas aspire to a merced (reward, privilege) by means of an autobiographical report. In the Elegías we observe the transformation of a catalogue of beneméritos of the Kingdom of New Granada into an epic poem. The source of authority of this text is not the individual but the collective of the veterans. Castellanos found the model for his role as a spokesman of the “nobility” in Fernán Pérez de Guzmán, author of the Generaciones y semblanzas (ca. 1460).

This article examines the lexical and botanical elements of the catalog of plants, flowers and vegetables of Espejo de paciencia by Silvestre de Balboa. The description of the flora follows a model tradition that seeks to renew the description of the ideal landscape from the genre of classical bucolic eclogue, transformed by the Renaissance eclogue. Among the most significant changes appear the use of indigenous lexicons and cumulative descriptions, which by their reiteration, seek to insist on the abundance and richness of Cuban nature.
