This investigation aims to reflect on epistemology as the main competence of the university social researcher, it is noteworthy that this premise is the product of the theorization of the doctoral thesis entitled social research and its competences in the university teacher, where seven competences are articulated and interact one another, in order to manage researches in line with emerging proposals for social research. The epistemological competence of the university social researcher is based on the philosophical questioning. In this regard, it is necessary for the researchers to philosophize about reality in their contexts, to ask themselves how to improve it, to approach it, from a research process. This will allow them to become researchers with relevance to the social changes proposed by the multiple social realities. They can thus know how to do research from the epistemology according to the mental-real parameters in which they develop.

The factor structure, internal consistency, construct validity, and predictive validity of the Puerto Rican version of the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ- PR) were studied in a sample of meditators (N = 157) and nonmeditators (N = 157). A five-factor structure was demonstrated in both samples, and the FFMQ and its subscales were shown to have good internal consistencies. Meditators scored higher on all facets of the FFMQ than the participants in the nonmeditating sample. Overall, the Puerto Rican FFMQ demonstrated favorable psychometric properties.

The main purpose of the study was to analyze the opinion that students of the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus (UPRRP) have about some risk behaviors in teenagers of both genders between the ages of 13-18. We administered an online survey, which was taken by 1,836 students enrolled during the first semester of the 2017-18 academic year. We used mixed methods: descriptive statistics analysis and content analysis. The findings reveal that the opinion of students is that youth is a stage of confusion and turbulence; that some risk behaviors have increased during the past five years and that it tends to be associated to male youth. These results suggest that university students tend to reproduce the dominant social imaginary in terms of risk behavior in youth. Further investigations should take into consideration the consequences of youth stigmatization, since this is a heterogeneous and diverse group.

The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences and lessons learned of hurricane Maria in a group of adolescents within the school context. Bronfenbrenner‘s (1994) theoretical model was used to inquire about the post hurricane María experiences and about the social and emotional aspects related to those experiences that represent an integral part of the development of all adolescents within the microsystem of the school.  A qualitative methodology was used; ten in-depth interviews were conducted to five adolescents, and five 9th to 10th teachers from the Puerto Rico‘s public schools.  All data was content analyzed using Atlas.ti.  Results of the experiences of hurricane Maria in the lives of the adolescent within the microsystem of the school and the family, the mesosystem and the ecosystem are discussed.  Based on the results of the study, recommendations were presented that can be considered by school officials should another similar atmospheric event is experienced in the island.

This exploratory study focused on strategies that K–12 teachers in Puerto Rico use to demonstrate self-efficacy in the classroom. A qualitative methodology was employed using the theoretical framework of Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) and Albert Bandura‘s theory of self-efficacy (1986; 2001).  Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six teachers at the K–12 level at public and private schools in Puerto Rico. Five were from public schools and one was from a private school. The interview questions centered on three central aspects of self-efficacy: (1) teachers‘ notions of self-efficacy, (2) strategies teachers use to demonstrate self-efficacy in the classroom, and (3) variables that affect their ability to carry out their definition of self-efficacy.  The results demonstrate strategies of self-efficacy used in Puerto Rico and their relationship to Puerto Rican culture is discussed. Recommendations for future research in the area of self-efficacy among educators in Puerto Rico are explored including curricular change, active learning techniques, integration of the social and economic backgrounds of students‘ communities and exploring the benefits of collective efficacy for school sites.  Some of these recommendations are explored in the context of education in Puerto Rico post Hurricane Maria.
