Objective. To show lung cancer (LC) mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in Mexico. Materials and methods. With the visualization tools at the Global Burden of Disease Study website, we analyzed LC mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) by state, sex, sociodemographic index (SDI), age, and risk factors between 1990 and 2016. Results. Mortality rate decreased from 13.9 to 9.1 per 100 000 between 1990 and 2016. This reduction is greater among men. However, deaths by LC rose from 5 478 to 8 470. DALYs rate also decreased. Northern states with higher SDI face a larger burden from LC but exhibited greater reductions compared with southern, less developed states. The burden of LC is concentrated among older population. Smoking is the main risk factor for LC. Conclusions. The burden by LC has decreased but is differential between states. LC threatens financially both the health system and individuals, since an important fraction of the population is not protected.

Objective. To assess the correlates of secondhand smoke exposure (SHS) in public and private settings. Materials and methods. Data came from the 2016 National Survey of Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco use. Multilevel Poisson models were conducted to evaluate factors associated with SHS. Results. Having a higher education, being male and being a young adult were associated with higher SHS in bars and restaurants. Men had greater SHS at work, while women and adolescents had greater exposure at home. Adults older than 45 years had higher SHS on public transportation compared to adolescents between 12-17 years old. Conclusions. Exposure to SHS remains high and affects the population differentially. To reduce SHS, it is necessary to apply Article 8 of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

Objective. To evaluate the impact of rotavirus (RV) vaccination after 10 years of it´s universalization on morbidity and mortality from Acute Diarrheal Disease (ADD) in mexican children under five years of age. Materials and methods. Annual median numbers for ADD new cases, hospitalizations and deaths were compared between pre and post universalization periods; absolute and relative reductions were calculated, considering p<0.05 values as significant. Results. Mortality, hospitalizations and new cases from ADD in children under five decreased 52.6, 46, and 15.5% respectively, in the posuniversalization period. During rotavirus seasons, reduction in mortality, hospitalizations and new cases was 66.9, 64.7, and 28.7% respectively. Conclusions. As of the universal introduction of RV vaccination in Mexico, significant and sustained reductions are appreciated for mortality and hospitalizations from ADD, less so for incidence. A most prominent effect is observed during the winter season.

Objective. To provide an overview of morbidity and mortality due to acute diarrheal disease in Mexico in order to understand its magnitude, distribution, and evolution from 2000 to 2016. Materials and methods. We carried out a longitudinal ecological study with secondary sources of information. We used data from epidemiological surveillance, health services, and vital statistics. We calculated and mapped measures of utilization of health services rates and mortality due to diarrheal diseases. Results. Diarrhea morbidity decreased by 42.1% across the period. However, emergency department attendances increased by 50.7% in the Ministry of Health. The hospitalization rate and mortality among the general population decreased by 37.6 and 39.7%, respectively, and the infant mortality rate decreased by 72.3% among children under five years of age. Chiapas and Oaxaca had the highest mortality among the states of Mexico. Conclusions. Cases of diarrhea, including rotavirus, have decreased in Mexico. However, in 2016, 3.4 per 100 000 people died due to diarrhea, which could have been avoided with health promotion.

Objective. To analyze the possible effect of certification models and healthcare organizations’ (HOs) participation incentives in the General Health Council certification process in the 1999-2017 period. Materials and methods. Official printed and online documents about HOs’ certification were collected. Information from instances related to the process was requested through transparency mechanisms. Health organizations’ participation in political-administrative periods between 1997-2017 was analyzed. Results. The annual average participation in the certification process during the 1999-2000 period was 259.5 HOs; during the 2013-2016 period, the average was 72.5. Public units’ participation in this process has been decreasing. In 2017, certified HO were <1%. Conclusions. No positive effects of adjustments to the certification model or the incentives applied were identified. Conversely, there is decreasing participation in the different political-administrative periods. The National HO Certification System and its possible effect on clinical quality must be thoroughly evaluated.

Objective. To describe and discuss the results of non-pharmacological interventions (NPI) adjuvants in the treatment of depressive symptoms among women with breast cancer (BC). Materials and methods. A systematic review on NPI was performed, which was applied to patients with cancer and depressive symptoms in seven databases. The review was limited from January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2017 and to English, Spanish and Portuguese languages. The medical descriptors used were “breast neoplasm” and “depression”. Results. There are several NPI that are able stimulate the physical or psychosocial dimensions. In this article we propose a classification based on nine identified therapeutic strategies, among which exercise, psychotherapy and yoga with meditation stand out. Conclusions. Based on the available evidence, we concluded that psychotherapy and yoga with meditation reduce depressive symptoms in patients with CaMa. More research is needed to determine the magnitude of the reduction of depressive symptoms, according to their severity, presence of comorbidities and diversity of INF.
