Scoresbya dentata Harris, Scoresbya pinnata sp. nov. and Sonoraphyllum mirabile gen. et sp. nov. are described from the Carnian (and/or Norian?) Santa Clara Formation, Barranca Group, southeastern central Sonora, northwestern Mexico. The original generic diagnosis of Scoresbya, based on Sc. dentata, is modified due to the recent discovery of Sc. integrifolia Meng Fan-son and Sc. pinnata, whose leaves have entire-margined or pinnate segments and lobes, respectively… in order to continue, download the full paper in PDF.

The Carnian—and/or Norian?—Santa Clara taphoflora from Sonora, Mexico, yields a large number of bennettitalean leaves. Most common are those placed here in Laurozamites gen. nov. Species are described as L.fragilis (Newberry) comb. nov., L. yaqui sp.nov., L. pima sp. nov. and L tarahumara sp. nov.—with two varieties, tarahumara var. nov. and dubiusvar. nov. The first three species are differentiated mainly according to the dimensions of the pinnae measured in specimen-rich palaeodemes, while the fourthis distinguished by the low venation density… in order to continue, download the full paper in PDF.

Mexico is rapidly being recognized as possessing some of the most spectacular and deepest caves in the world. Six of the 46 cave systems in the world that have been explored to depths greater than 1,000 m are in Mexico (Minton, 1994). Two of the world's 10 deepest explored caves are in Oaxaca. Mexico's second deepest explored cave, Sistema Cheve, is in the Sierra Juárez in northeastern Oaxaca (Figure 1). On May, 1997, the IV Symposium on the Cenozoic Tectonics and Volcanism of Mexico was organized, within the II Convention on the Geologic Evolution of Mexico, that took place in Pachuca, Hidalgo, Mexico. Several papers were presented in this symposium, that included the state of the art in these topics. Due to the high quality of the new data shown during the symposium, it was decided to gather these works in a special volume and publish them in order that the scientific community and public in general could have access to them in a journal with high publishing quality and good diffusion in Mexico and other countries...
