Resumen
After analysing why demographic change may be cause for concern, as well as what may and may not be expected from immigration in relation to its impact on the sustainability of the pension system, this paper estimates how many immigrants it would be necessary to attract in the future in order to maintain the current standards of quasi-labour dependency in Spain. The requirements are compared with the recent past of immigration in our country to conclude that the medium and long-term sustainability of the pension system through immigration or the birth-rate is not the only solution - it is not even the most important one – in order to preserve the balance and sustainability of the system itself.

Resumen
This article reviews the available evidence concerning the impact of aging on the evolution of health expenditure. The chronological age per se does not lead to greater expenditure, but rather its relationship with need determinants. In Spain, we are witnessing an expansion of morbidity, together with a notable influence of non-demographic factors on the boost in expenditure. The adoption of a decisive strategy for the management of chronicity, the promotion of active aging and the rationalisation of the use of health technologies could curb the increase in health expenditure.

Better regulation policies are a consequence of the reflection generated after the great liberalisation of the economy in the 1980s and 1990s on the inevitability of public intervention in regulation, particularly on the need for it to be carried out correctly, so as not to impose excessive administrative burdens on citizens and businesses that undermine the competitiveness of the economic system and, ultimately, unjustifiably restrict freedom. Principles such as the predictability of regulations, citizen participation in their development, and proportionality are some of the bases of these policies.

Resumen
The increase in life expectancy and the fall in the birth rate have led to a significant process of population aging. Forecasts indicate a significant increase in the population over 64 years of age and, therefore, the reduction of the potentially active population. Changes in the composition of this group, in terms of age and education, together with reforms in the pension systems, are expected to lead to an increase in activity and employment rates, especially among women and individuals between 55 and 64 years old.

En un mundo cada vez más complejo, en el que la competencia es cada vez mayor y más global, los clústeres locales podrían seguir desempeñando un papel muy relevante. El desarrollo de estrategias ancladas en un lugar, caracterizado por dinámicas innovadoras, es clave para poder beneficiarse de la integración en las cadenas globales de valor (CGV) y capturar parte del valor generado en ellas. A través del estudio de la coevolución de los clústeres y las CGV, en este artículo se identifican aquellos elementos que son críticos para el desarrollo de las regiones y los clústeres en el ámbito mundial, pudiendo así explorarse con mayor grado de detalle la complejidad que en la próxima década pueda generar la globalización.

El debate sobre la evolución de la población contemporánea enfrenta a quienes consideran el creciente peso demográfico de los mayores una fatalidad y quienes lo ven como un progreso. Aquí se defiende que el proceso al que se alude convencionalmente con la expresión «envejecimiento demográfico» ofrece razones tanto para la satisfacción como para la inquietud. Las dificultades que plantea (sobre todo, de orden económico y fiscal) no pueden empañar el gran logro que supone el aumento de la esperanza de vida. Pero la conciencia de semejante logro tampoco puede llevar a soslayar esas dificultades.

Resumen
This paper looks at changes in the Spanish public pension system since the last crisis, which have led to a better deal for the pensionable population in exchange for incurring a high deficit. It also considers possible changes to the system in the future based on variables which can be predicted with enough accuracy, particularly the aging of the population, and others which are more uncertain and which relate to the creation of wealth in the country. The context presents a significant challenge for Spanish society if it is to achieve an adequate level of sufficiency of benefits and equity in the distribution of efforts among generations, which most likely entails additional reforms.
