Recent decades have seen significant demographic and socioeconomic changes in industrialised countries which have significantly increased the risk of vulnerability and poverty among younger generations. The objective of this paper is to analyse the role played by public policies in Spain in the fight against inequalities by age cohorts in a comparative context. This analysis will allow us to identify how we should advance in the design of public policies that promote a change in this trend and improve social cohesion from an intergenerational point of view.

Society is witnessing deep demographic, technological and lifestyle changes that are decisively transforming productive forces and income distribution schemes. In this context, the steep fall in fertility and birth rates is, in part, a reflection of an ever-increasing longevity, if not its consequence, or, at least, is a sharp contrast with it. Nothing can replace births when it comes to essential aspects of life, both individual and social, but, as I argue in this essay, an improved social and institutional age management before retirement, as well as the adoption of policies that make automation into a true opportunity for workers, would be much more conductive to a better income distribution than pro-natalist policies designed to restore old times age balances.

The current situation of women is conditioned by their rapid integration into the labour market and by the lack of a reorganisation of dependent care-giving. Their role in the home affects the form their presence in the labour market takes: a low employment rate and greater engagement than men in part-time work. Women are increasingly spending more time working and drawing on family networks when their salary is increasingly necessary, men have not fully assumed the role of care-givers and the State has withdrawn under the pretext of the crisis. To the extent that we are moving towards a model in which all adults, men and women, work equally, the question as to who will do the care-giving acquires a particular urgency.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) is a central issue in international business research as a critical determinant of multiple economic outcomes, such as gross domestic product (GDP), employment, capital stock generation, productivity, etc. However, the analysis of the effect produced by this indicator at the company level has been under-studied, especially in the context of Latin American countries. This paper analyzes the effect of FDI flows in companies using a sample of Ecuadorian firms for the period 2007-2016. Our analysis, focused on manufacturing companies, shows that performance indicators are higher in those companies that receive IDE. We complement our analysis controlling by a series of financial indicators and by including other sources of fixed effects.

In recent years, different governments have launched programmes to attract foreign entrepreneurial talent, with the aim of incorporating greater entrepreneurial skills into the business sectors of their economies in an environment characterised by the growing importance of innovation. These programmes align within the set of investment attraction policies, and for this reason they are occasionally led by Investment Attraction and Promotion Agencies (APIs in the Spanish acronym). Within this context, in 2016 the Spanish Government, through the ICEX-Invest in Spain agency, launched one of these programmes, Rising Startup Spain, the design and implementation of which give rise to different learnings as regards public policies.

Digitally-empowered platform companies, such as Google, Facebook, Amazon or Alibaba have conquered the world. They are now the leading companies in terms of market capitalisation. Some digital prophets went further, suggesting that for these digital platforms national borders do not matter any longer. Recognising the fast international spread of these companies, this article shows that geography still matters. This happens for three main reasons. The first is that differences in national (or regional) regulations, languages, and cultures still hold, even for platforms. The second factor is related to the very characteristics of the transactions performed; in many cases these cannot be fully carried out online, involving the delivery of products or services offline. The third reason is related to the establishment of local ecosystems, especially in multisided platforms.
