On the basis of postulates by Severo Sarduy, Alejo Carpentier, José Lezama Lima, Omar Calabrese, Mijaíl Bajtín and Julia Kristeva, intertextuality as a neobaroque resource is analyzed in El hombre, la hembra y el hambre [Man, female and hunger] (1998) by Cuban writer Daína Chaviano. By means of a thorough reading, a comparative study is made between Claudia —protagonist of this literary work—, Papillon and McMurphy — characters of the films Papillon (1973) and One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), respectively—. Finally, imagination and the recovery of the historical past are proposed as a road for the individual’s freedom and the peoples' identity construction.

From the concepts of ‘paideia’ and ‘Bildung’ a reflection on the relation between education and training is presented; as well, the importance of the latter in teaching processes is stressed, since it enriches professional training, as it develops gregarious values, critical reflection and empathy between individuals. Human trainingand universal citizenship are put forward as a way to face the technical and economic circumstances that presently prevail and which have broken the socio-environmental balance, making room for a civilizing crisis.

Travel literature is characterized by the use of descriptive rhetorical resources, specifically, hypotyposis. This strategy prevails in “In the Cave of the Children's Ghosts” by Lafcadio Hearn; a story on a visit to Kukedo Caves. The aim of this article is to compare segments of the text with two Spanish-language translations by José Manuel de Prada Samper and Esteve Serra, respectively, in order to find out the sort of strategies prevailing in the treatment of this rhetoric device. According to Andrew Chesterman's descriptive framework, the translation strategies are classified as syntactic, semantic or pragmatic, and their detection in the final text may hint on the translators' goals. In the case at hand, literal translation prevails, but also semantic and pragmatic strategies are resorted to in order to reproduce equivalents for the rhetoric devices of the original text or o make its context explicit.

From the standpoint of literary and cultural semeiotics, the compositional and stylistic characteristics of the novel over the Intervention period and Second Mexican Empire (1868-1906) are recognized, contextualized and explained; these were articulated by a group of writers who adhered to Ignacio Manuel Altamirano’s nationalist poetics —Juan Antonio Mateos, Vicente Riva Palacio, Ireneo Paz, Victoriano Salado Álvarez, Juan de Dios Peza— at the end of the fight against the French-Austrian invader. Such ethical and aesthetical resolve was an artistic response to José Zorrilla's statements in The Soul’s play (1867), a work with which he established a silent debate or controversy. This work provides a corpus within literary Mexican history with shape and meaning; a corpus which in spite of being mentioned and recognized, thus far remained amorphous.
