This research examined how news content influences attitudes towards Syrian refugees in Turkey. The study aimed to understand if the way Syrian refugees are attributed in media – that is, media salience about Syrian refugees that comprise their image – would cause an attitude change in the public. More specifically, we intend to determine whether being exposed to positive news coverage about Syrian refugees would cause an attitude change in the public from negative to positive. For the purpose of the study, we have conducted a quasi-experimental research and used a pretest-posttest design to investigate the second-level agenda-setting effects. Two experiments (a pilot and a main experiment) were conducted during the Spring term of 2017 in Turkey. The participants were selected from a large private university in Turkey for the experiments. The t-test results suggest that positive media emphasis on the images of Syrian refugees had a positive impact on public opinion and caused an overall attitude change in the public.

The homosexual marriage legalization in Spain generated a political and media controversy. The main objective of this research is to know how politicians and media used the socalled press frames when talking about that legislation. We also want to analyze argumentation patterns used by social actors regarding social sectors faced in Spain. Based on framing theory, we have used content analysis methodology in order to analyze texts and images published by ABC and El País about that law during previous and next week to the bill approval. We conclude that there were two opinion streams, secular and catholic, which are not exactly the same positions promoted by the main parties in the left wing (PSOE) and the right wing (PP).

Ever since the recording of data began, television audiences have been continuously increasing in Spain. A decrease in the average daily consumption per person of approximately four minutes per year has been registered since March of 2013. Is this a cyclical phenomenon or is it a forecast of substantial change? Method. The research places the Spanish case hermeneutically in the context of a society unified by the globalization of the industry of entertainment in a unitary market. We have used audience measurement techniques and public statistical sources, or those of private institutes, to compare variables in long-term intervals. The question posed is whether or not digital technology promotes a new "digital culture", or if it confirms the continuity of the cultural consumption. Conclusions: There is evidence that other media are uniting with television, there are no signs, however, that this possible change might imply a modification of the cultural patterns characterized by massive consumption of the culture industry.

Ongoing downsizing in the media sector has sparked a new start-up culture in the field of journalism. Over the past few years an increasing number of news organizations seeking to leverage social and symbolic rather than financial capital and cultivate employee as well as audience loyalty have entered the market (Wagemans, Witschge and Deuze, 2016). This paper examines El Diario (eldiario.es) and El Confidencial (elconfidencial.com). Qualitative methods involving the on-site observation in their newsrooms and semi-structured interviews with their journalists were employed. Findings indicate that both see themselves as alternative news providers whose emphasis El Diario draws heavily upon the symbolic capital of its founder Ignacio Escolar, El Confidencial, has banked primarily on its social capital.

The history of the Portuguese press in the United States brings together dozens of newspapers based on different States that were published since the end of the 19th century, with greater or lesser success. Most were ephemeral and had a little media impact. However, other ambitious projects developed and managed to achieve high levels of popularity in the Portuguese immigrant community, spreading news related to the colony of immigrants, Portugal and the United States. One of the most paradigmatic cases was the weekly Jornal Português, founded in the city of Oakland in 1932 and published continuously until 1997. Using essencially a qualitative methodology, this paper describes and analyzes some of the most interesting historical episodes to understand its relevance in the Portuguese diaspora in California.

This article characterizes some typical situations of the current working environments of Cuban journalism, identifying the occurrence of a phenomenon here defined as de-professionalization of the press. From the theoretical systematization of several Cuban researches published between 2012 and 2017 about the professional culture of journalists and their relationship with the newsmaking manner, it is determined how internal and external processes to the media vitiate the journalistic practice. These processes are described considering three fundamental premises: the presence of obsolete habits and practices of work, limitations in the conception and use of digital information technologies and the instrumentalist conception of the press by the institutions of the political system and the civil society.

Climate change demands society to adopt a favorable attitude to respond to that issue and the media incorporates a valuable tool to achieve it. For this reason, nine media of Spain and Mexico proceeded to identify the density, thematic, and informative treatment that were carried out on the subject, during the years 2015, 2016, and 2017. It was concluded that the media of both countries pay little attention to the matter and when they do, often relate to sensational events, offer a limited thematic and rarely resort to experts as journalistic sources. Thus, is expected that the contents make little contribution to develop a cultural environmentalism.

In this work we reflect on a new tendency of the last years of employing movie posters of classic and contemporary films as a form of political criticism. Through digital tools such as Photoshop, the spectators/users are reimagining and resignifying the traditional movie poster format as a new form of graphic humor that ingeniously portrays the political news of a country. In this paper we focus on the case of Spain, where it is possible to observe several examples of this type of digitally manipulated movie posters through which the users -and not only the cartoonists and traditional media- are portraying and denouncing the current Spanish political situation through humour.

In 2016, Spain monopolized press coverage worldwide due to the political-institutional crisis caused by unprecedented electoral fragmentation. On January 13, the shortest legislative term ever began and was the starting point of a crisis that meant a year without government. This article explores the image that the world press provided regarding these events and their influence on international public opinion. This research is organized in two phases. The first measures the presence of Spain in the world's written press through an analysis of quantitative content. The second phase analyses the information on the political and institutional crisis using a sample of 1,127 articles published in 17 newspapers of reference. The main conclusion is that the world information on Spain in 2016 focused on the political crisis, but in addition to parliamentary deadlock, its causes and its consequences, other issues were emerging as central themes as well, such as the problem of corruption, the crisis of the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party), and the independence movement in Catalonia. Despite this situation, the image of Spain does not seem to have deteriorated according to the country brand indexes reviewed.
