Trusting the audience to contribute data, a practice called crowdsourcing, is one of several procedures of contemporary data journalism. While previous research has embraced the idea of crowdsourcing as a transparent way of engaging the audience, the journalistic practice of crowdsourcing is currently still limited. The Spanish case is particularly illuminating of the gap between theoretical expectations and reality. Although online news media in Spain stands out because of its commitment to exploring interactive possibilities, and its audience is especially prone to comment on news, this qualitative study presents evidence that Spanish data journalists remain quite reluctant to embrace crowdsourcing as a research method. Based on semi-structured interviews with five Spanish data journalists, this paper explains the motivations behind this reluctance as well as the challenges of activating the audience.

Juana Rivas case has been a new point of reference in media coverage of gender violence. During the summer of 2017, the media focused on the story of this woman and her children. The circumstances and peculiarities of the case led to multiple news items and conflicting opinion articles. This analysis aims to analyze part of this information through its impact on the social network Twitter, as a channel for dissemination and learning of cyberfeminism. The conclusions reveal that in various circumstances the media failed to comply with precise legislative norms and informative recommendations on gender violence in Spain.

This article reflects on two processes of appropriation and media management with a social sense, which are founded upon the recognition of communication processes and their impact on the transformations of peripheral environments by empowered communities and the emancipated agents of communicative mediation. Two experiences of social communication are taken as a reference, which respond to divergent scenarios: On the one hand, that from Project Barrio U´s volunteers who work within the framework of the University of Antioquia´s extension program is considered, as it offers an academic field of professional training in social communication. On the other hand, the initiative named Barrio Revealing (Revelando Barrio), from the Ciudad Comuna communication group, whose emphasis rests on community communication. These two experiences highlight the importance of the role of subjects in the processes of appropriation and management of media with a social sense and they allow the recognition of the communication processes that bring about the transformation of the subjectivities of the mediating actors (community communicator, volunteer) and the emergence of communicative territoriality.

This article presents the results of an investigation based on a critical analysis of the discourse on the Amazonian conflict of 2009 in Peru called “Baguazo” by the media. The research project examines how the journalistic television discourses in Peru represent indigenous peoples of the Amazon region during the conflict. The structures and strategies of public verbal discourse on the conflict in Bagua are analyzed from a social, political and critical perspective to understand how power is established, legitimated, exercised, or resisted during an ethnic-social conflict. A combination of multiple methodological tools were selected, focusing on the analysis of social actors, social action, time, legitimacy and framing, in a sample of journalistic television interviews considered politically important cases. The research exposes how the dominant discourse of the interviews constructs a negative image of the Amazonian indigenous peoples and supports the official discourse of the Peruvian State regarding the Amazonian conflict.

This work is born of the concern of the members of the project, the lack of presence of indigenous people and Afro-descendants in the newscast of Ecuadorian television, as well as the perception that the representatives of these races have for the stereotypes attributed to them, especially in the sitcoms. All of this, despite the fact that the Organic Communication Law prohibits discrimination. The Law is also inclusive and promotes multiculturalism and plurinationality at all levels. The methodology used for this research was the Critical Analysis of the Discourse of Perceived Discrimination, based on the taxonomy elaborated by the Australian scientist David Mellor. To do this, It was interviewed a non-probabilistic sample of convenience, of Afro-descendant and indigenous people, from the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador (with a questionnaire of open questions).

In February 2017, the first cyber-ballots of a binding nature were registered in Madrid, that is, those in which the neighbors made binding decisions for the city council. They chose the design that will have the new Plaza de España, one of the most emblematic of the city, and agreed to the creation of a single transport ticket that would allow changing media without paying again for ninety minutes. This was channeled through the portal "Decide Madrid" (https://decide.madrid.es/). The person in charge of that space affirms that the new technologies allow to transfer to the represented ones a quota of the power of the representatives. However, the Madrid promise already shows its first limitations: the creation of the single ticket exceeds the responsibility of the Madrid City Council and involves another institution, the Community of Madrid, which is not obliged to execute the citizens' decision.
