Political representation in Thomas Hobbes is a matter of bare designation. An exercise with language. The basic movement within the body of the Commonwealth is to appoint someone as officer for the people. This theoretical articulation is not sufficiently developed though. The aim of the present text is to profit from the help the four-fold taxonomy on representation by A.P. Griffiths and R. Wollheim offers, and of the ellucidation Michäel Foessel presents around what is intimate before what is private/what is public, as instruments that could shed some light onto the fundamental intuitions Hobbes gathered in his main work, the Leviathan.

This paper reflects on some institutional problems of democratic governance and on what kind of democracy is desirable. The article assesses the validity of the pessimistic diagnosis of some authors - Caplan, Brennan, van Reybrouck, Mounk - based on institutional causes and social dysfunctions. From different perspectives they point to the weakening of democracies and the disconnection of political actions in favour of democratic ideals, as an expression of a loss of political legitimacy manifested by neo-populisms

The EU represents an institutional and ontological novelty that raises conceptual challenges to political theory. Indeed, the EU is key to understanding the civil and political community of the 21st century, suitable for the globalized world. Yet, the European project, and its main civic achievement, that is, Union citizenship, faces deep challenges in light of nationalist and populist discourses expanding all across Europe, as the case of the so-called Brexit shows. This articles aims at highlighting the political singularity of the EU and underlining the challenges it poses to political theory, stressing the reach and shortcomings of Union citizenship.

The emotional meaning that is usually associated with lots of political terms has led, in the frame of political theory, to many disagreements about their use. To illustrate these controversies I will refer to a discussion of Hans Kelsen with Lenin –about the concept of democracy– and another one with Eric Voegelin, that concerns the notion of political representation. To identify what kind of disagreements haven arisen, I will use a classification of terminological controversies provided by Genaro Carrió.

In this paper I will examin how institutionality force, strongly attached to law and norms, leads legislators to attach as well to this norms at the same time they contravene human rights and desobey constitutional agreements criminalizing activists and defenders of human rights.  This double bind situation has a mirrored efect in social movements as soon as they practice at the same time civil desobedience and take legal action on defense of their land.

The growing tendencies of complexity and indeterminacy characteristic of globalization and exacerbated by neoliberal economic policies, produce changes in the economic dynamics of the world market and effects that disrupt the juridical-political institutional frameworks of the states. From this horizon I analyze: how these transformations radicalize the questions about the possibilities of inclusion or exclusion of social agents, the density of fragmenting effects on the formation of collective identities, and ponder the opportunities or constraints of relevant political intervention, or whether there is room for resistance.

At times like today's institutional crisis, feminism might have the potential to become a core asset on the political horizon. I line with this, bridges between different feminisms should be built. Rethinking identity by taking on board the intertwined multiple loyalties might help establish new alliances among the different feminist approaches. Such alliances would strengthen feminist demands even more.

Hannah Arendt began her political activities in Zionism as a vindication of a political space for the Jewish people, recognized as a people, and also as a fight against Nazi totalitarianism. Her request of a Jewish army during the Second World War is related to these sovereignist interests.

The organization of political power in a democratic society is not without its difficulties. Thus, the phenomenon known as constitutionalism has brought to the fore the discussion about whether this and democracy are opposite principles on which a sensible political theory should attempt to reach a compromise or are on the contrary complementary principles that have a common origin. Ronald Dworkin, one of the most important philosophers of law in recent decades, offers a suggestive reflection on this issue. This inquiry is not only of interest considered, but the way in which the article sheds light on the understanding of law as an institutional phenomenon.
