The Tribunal of the Holy Office was in charge of watching over books to maintain religious orthodoxy in the territories of the Spanish Crown, an activity that was justified by the effect that books have everywhere on the social, cultural, economic, political and religious spheres. In line with the social concerns of this time, different mechanisms of inquisitorial control were instrumentalized, paying special attention to prohibited books and those that needed to be expurgated. This article analyzes one of these mechanisms of control, known as the “library visit,” through the files found in the General Archive of the Nation from between the years 1716 and 1720. This testimony allows us to reconstruct and explain many aspects of these visits, which were conducted in New Spain each time a new index was published, and whose effects can be seen to this day in the many antiquarian books conserved in different national and international archives.

In the local historiography, studies of property rights and land ownership patterns in 19th and 20th Century Chiapas have revealed the particularities of communal and private farmland. This article seeks to contribute to the debate on private property in Chiapas by analyzing co-ownership in Comitán. The objective is to analyze a form of joint ownership, but one that remained private, distinct from the communal land ownership patterns seen elsewhere. What was co-ownership in 19th and early 20th Century Chiapas and how did it operate? These questions allow us to sketch out one aspect of the agrarian history of Chiapas that is focused on private property, especially in terms of the area between what was then the administrative department of Comitán and northwestern Guatemala, where the border remained undefined for a large part of the 19th Century.

After World War II, there was a boom in Mexican pharmaceutical research, thanks to the establishment of interested public institutions and private companies. Despite the important accomplishments of domestic and international scientists during the postwar period, the rhythm of Mexican innovations and patents was nevertheless irregular, given the lack of scientific infrastructure in the pharmaceutical sector. One of the local patent leaders, however, was the Hungarian-Mexican scientist José Erdos Blau at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) National School of Biological Sciences (ENCB). The objective of this article is to analyze the network of innovation that Erdos built with the ENCB at its center, in collaboration with the private sector, showing how this network became one of the most important in the Mexican pharmaceutical sector, driving research in the field of organic chemistry and the development of medications. The information presented has been obtained by examining pharmaceutical patents registered during the period in question, archival documents and articles in academic journals and popular science magazines published by contemporary chemical and pharmaceutical companies.

This article analyzes the discourse contained in the lithographs that illustrated the historical novels that appeared in the early years of the Restored Republic (1868-1870). These visual exercises aimed to consolidate national identity and keep the flame of liberal patriotism alive. It aims to show how these images were not a mere illustrative element, but that they had their own message, being pedagogical references for the political and literary elites when educating the population, useful for denouncing the vices and abuses of the colonial era, praising the heroes of the independence movement and encouraging the collective memory of recently-experienced events such as the French Intervention and the Second Empire.
