Christian theology considered sodomy to be one of the most serious manifestations of the sin of lust, but as it occurred frequently in New Spain, those accused of committing it often faced no consequences. The widespread and wrongheaded belief that the Holy Office persecuted sodomy nevertheless persists in academia, even though the sources show the contrary, as we shall see. Through the case of a mulatto minor who denounced a black puppetmaster to a priest in Yanhuitlán, it is possible to catch a glimpse of the lives of marginalized individuals who, in poverty, isolation and anonymity, traversed long distances, escaping the control and surveillance of the authorities in order to make a living from the circus arts. Here, we can also question the alleged ethnic and racial solidarity of people of African descent, an analytic category imported from the Anglo-Saxon world that does little to explain the complex relationships between New Spaniards.

This article documents and analyzes the feminist dissidence within the Mexican Catholic Church in the 1970s, focusing on the movement for the ordination of women. It studies the movement’s Catholic roots and activist networks, showing the leading role played by the groups in Cuernavaca (Morelos, Mexico) that were centered around Betsie Hollants, the dialogue and exchange with activists from the United States and the ideological tensions of a transnational movement in the polarized context of the Cold War. This article’s historical window for analyzing Catholic feminism is the planning, founding and early years of the Mujeres para el Diálogo group and its sources include correspondence, memoirs, minutes, books, newspapers and magazines held by public and private archives in Mexico and the United States.

This article focuses on the role played by Rodrigo de Albornoz, a New Spanish accountant, during a very critical period for the Spanish Crown due to the repeated wars of Emperor Charles V against the King of France and Suleiman the Magnificent. In 1534, Albornoz returned to Castille to participate in the Tunisian campaign against the Berber corsair Hayreddin Barbarrosa, an ally of the Ottoman sultan, and the subsequent campaigns in Piedmont and Provence against the army of Frances I. In 1536, the New Spanish accountant was given the task of transporting from Seville to Italy the first gold and silver coins from the new Sevillan mint, which were used to finance the imperial army in its military campaigns.

This article proposes an analysis of four moments in which amnesty laws of a political nature were enacted in Mexico: January 1937, December 1940, September 1978 and January 1994. In each case, an attempt is made to analyze the subject and contents of the amnesty laws, along with their political context. We have not always been able to determine the beneficiaries as we have with their legal and political aspects. A detailed exploration of archives and official publications would allow one to uncover evidence of proposed amnesties not covered by this article. The underlying premise used herein is that amnesty laws are one key to understanding the political history of a large part of the 20th Century. By studying them, it is possible to more fully understand the judicial functioning of the Constitution of 1917.
