This article analyzes the early years of the Argentinean and Mexican Red Crosses, starting in 1864, under the coordination of the International Committee of the Red Cross, up through 1923, when the League of Red Cross Societies organized the First Pan-American Red Cross Conference. It compares the ties forged through medical humanitarianism, as reflected in the constitution of the national societies in both countries and connected to gender, professional and sectorial participation, resolutions taken during crisis moments, conflicts and political instability. The sources, both published and unpublished, include manuals and official reports by the Red Crosses of Argentina, Mexico and Spain, as well as the Archive du Comité International de la Croix Rouge (Geneva).

This article seeks to pin down certain parallels between the mythology of the niños héroes of Chapultepec and its pedagogical use by the state (particularly under the Porfiriato) and similar narratives that originated in the French Revolution and were taken up for educational purposes during the Third Republic. Here, we will examine the cases of Joseph Bara and Agricol Viala in order to compare the development of the civic cult around both of these figures to that of the niños héroes (particularly emphasizing Juan Escutia), as well as the ways in which they were included in the textbooks of both countries in the late 19th Century.

This article analyzes the political debate on republicanism that was held in Mexico during the five months following Benito Juárez’s return to the country’s capital on July 15, 1867. It primarily uses leading articles in the contemporary press and, to a lesser degree, other texts such as speeches and political programs, which are interpreted in their original context. The goal is to determine if, during this period, there was a situation in Mexico analogous to the “Machiavellian moment,” as Pocock put it in the 1970s. That is, if, in the moment in which a republic stops being an ideal and becomes the country’s political reality, intellectuals and publicists who become disenchanted with the government’s behavior turn to the reformulation of principles and theories of a more or less republican stamp in order to propose responses that would allow for the moral and political stability of the republic to be maintained.
