Using k-wave toolbox as teaching aid in subjects related to physical acoustics is proposed. This toolbox enables simple and efficient simulation of time domain wave propagation. It is widely used for simulating the behaviour of ultrasonic waves in biological media. By adding a small number of instructions it is possible to simulate acoustic field propagation for two-dimensional conditions, based on a reference image (BMP file) in which points of different colours represent specific elements within the simulation. This enables experimentation of different situation using the k-wave toolbox with minimal MATLAB/Octave know-how. Any alteration on the images by simple cut, paste, move or rotate operation results in new simulation conditions.

The acoustic analysis of gunshots provides valuable information in the forensic field. Through the measurement and calculation of the physical properties produced by the deflagration of the gases at the moment of shooting, it is possible to estimate the released acoustic energy. First, the calculation of the angular source energy proposed in the ISO 17201 standard is applied. Subsequently, the estimation of the acoustic propagation in free field is carried out to obtain the sound exposure level. Finally, a field test is performed in order to validate the simulated values. The implementation of the method is compiled in a practical software to automate a quick data loading and obtaining results.

Acoustic wave reflections from corrugated surfaces are analyzed. For this work, a proposal of Yi-Fan Zhu on a relatively simple model of metasurface is taken as a basis. Each groove of a corrugated surface can be considered analogous to a linear array, while the depth of its grooves is related to the phase of each source. Zhu's original proposal takes the phase gradient of the arrangement as a design parameter. In this paper we analyze the advantages of surface design from the time-delay gradient. It also presents the possibility of impose brief delays in the whole pattern of reflections independently of the general design process.

In this work, the design of an autopilot for small unmanned vehicles is presented. It is focused mainly on the system’s architecture, while presenting some important remarks of the developed firmware. In particular, the firmware uses rosserial, a package that allows a simple connection with ROS (Robot Operating System), which is useful for a number of applications. The work is validated experimentally on an multirotor-type unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and on an autonomous surface vehicle (ASV). These vehicles have been developed by our group, and this work provides information about such projects, which may be useful for those interested in the development of this kind of vehicles.

The present document describes the development and verification process of a power system for brushless direct current motors, specially designed for its usage in electric vehicles. This proposal is motivated by the current expansion of the electric mobility technologies as a solution to reduce the contaminant emissions in transport activities. The proposed design implements additional features which are fundamental for this kind of applications, as regenerative braking and telemetry through a mobile application. The prototype was built and verified through several laboratory tests.

This work is about the development of a system for the recording of holophonic sound and the obtaining of binaural acoustic parameters that characterize the spatial perception of sound. At the first part, the implementation of a prototype of a low cost acoustic mannequin, head and torso simulator (HATS), is presented, to which its anthropometric characteristics and frequency responses were analyzed. The second part describes the developed algorithms to process the data measured through the HATS. Finally, some results calculated with the developed system are shown, and compared with those obtained through a commercial software. The applications of the developed measurement system are several, among them can be mentioned: the recording of 3D sounds, the calculation of subjective parameters in room acoustics, or the measurement of noise doses to assess the hearing damage of people exposed to noise through headphones.

We constantly use the results of measurements to trade, to take decisions, to reach compatibility between elements or to evaluate risks. The International System of Units (SI) is essential to express these results in a clear and comparable way. The SI is part of a diplomatic convention whose objective is to achieve international compatibility for trade, science, and sustainable development. Recently, a new definition of the SI has been approved, in which the system is defined in terms of seven reference constants whose numerical values are established by convention. In this way, the kilogram is disconnected from an artifact, the ampere from a theoretical experiment, and the kelvin and mole leave the definitions based on the property of a substance. Now, all the units of the system can be derived from the reference constants. The aim of this redefinition is to reach long-term stability, consistency, and coherence of the system, and to create a formal framework that fosters the growth of science and technology. This article focuses on the effects of redefinition in electrical units.

The detailed study of the response of anisotropic linear materials to electromagnetic fields has as one of its aims the design of new devices of interest in Optics, Optoelectronics and Electronics. In this paper we present a simple computer tool that is able to determine the characteristics of the propagation of plane waves through an isotropic-anisotropic uniaxial interface with arbitrary direction of the optical axis with respect to the direction of incidence. The algorithms were checked with the analytical results in cases where the incidence plane coincides with each of the principal planes of the crystal.

An analysis of the factors involved in the signal formation of the photomultiplier tubes is performed. These devices are extremely sensitive light detectors, widely used in photon counting applications. The study and design of the polarization network of photomultiplier tubes is discussed, laying the groundwork for performance testing. Through a detailed analysis of the operation of the photomultiplier tubes and their polarization electronics, it is expected that the user can separate the response of the polarization circuit from the information carried by the output pulses.

A circuit theory approach is presented for the analysis of acoustically coupled spaces. It is based on energy flow and balance with a similar analogy to the one used for solving dynamic thermal systems, where acoustic power is analog  to electric current and acoustic energy density is analog to voltage. Room volume is equivalent to capacitor and sound  absorption is equivalent to a resistor. From these analogies and Laplace-transformed models it is possible to get stationary or transient response solutions.
