In 2021 university professors from various campuses of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Unam) developed a series of collective actions to demand payment and better conditions: They promoted the #LaUNAMnoPaga movement. In this study we inquire about the working conditions of the Unam course teachers and the way in which they experienced it until they reached collective action. We think that emotions and the subjective process are fundamental aspects in the formation of political identities. To know these emotions, we ap- plied a survey in 3 schools, the Faculty of Sciences, the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences. In the study, we expose the working conditions of a complex structure, in which temporality and uncertainty characterize the working life of most teachers. We then discuss how these conditions are experienced with discomfort and concern. Finally, we analyze how this indi- vidual discomfort was transformed into a collective action with emotions such as indignation and solidarity. This article analyzes the different forms of academic and scientific production of 202 cnPq scientific productivity grants in the field of sociology in Brazil. The technical analysis was based on a study with a quantitative methodological perspective that established the creation of an academic productivity indicator composed of 18 variables. The indicator created was analyzed considering several variables such as gender, region, internationalization, type of scholarship, management positions held etc. As the main contributions of this research, we can highlight the following: a) visibility of regional, gender and inequalities in relation to program grades in the distribution of productivity fellows; b) unveiling the predominant factors in the hierarchization process of scholarship holders in the field of sociology, in which academic production becomes secondary.

This article reviews the social studies on pesticides in Yucatan. From reviewing the literature on the subject, three moments in Yucatan were identified in which the State has promoted the use of pesticides: the “Plan Chaac”, which promoted citrus growing in the south of the state in the1960s; the “Programa de Reordenación Henequenera y Desarrollo Integral de Yucatan”, which sought to diversify the state’s agricultural activities; and the introduction of monocultures such as genetically modified soybeans in the 21st century. Five contributions of social studies on pesticides in Yucatan are identified: 1) the regis- tration of pesticides used in the field, including highly hazardous pesticides prohibited in other countries; 2) management practices of producers, including protection measures and disposal of pesticide containers; 3) the perception of risk regarding the damage caused by pesticides; 4) the effects of pesticides and 5) the role of government policies and programs. From these five contributions it is possible to appreciate the colonial and unequal character of the relations between the North and the global South.

Retaking a critical perspective on development, this article addresses how development projects affect the territory of Yucatecan Mayan population, which from their point of view produces greater social vulnerability. It is around the last one that the importance of attending local voices is discussed, in order to transcend the predominant development model in the Peninsula and it is concluded that there is an urgent need to think about other forms of well-being that are not linked to economic instrumental rationality.

The study of emerging diseases has been developed for several decades in Yucatan (Mexico). Biology, entomology, virology, immunology, medicine, and other disciplines have built a tradition on this issue in the region; however, the trajectory of this field of knowledge has been influenced by the scientific agendas of central regions in scientific production (the United States and Western Europe, mainly). This article analyzes the relationship between centers and peripheries, highlighting the asymmetries and the creative work of Yucatan scientists to resist them. It is concluded that the scientific practices of researchers in Yucatan respond to global agendas but simultaneously produce breaking points thanks to a creative dimension in the construction of knowledge.

In this article, the relevance of developing Legal Sociology in the Yucatan Peninsula is exposed, within the framework of emerging political and interethnic conflicts. It is stated that Law regulates and constructs diverse aspects of social life but that, at the same time, social relations shape and delimit it. In this sense, the analysis of the legal system and its actors, in relation to the demands of civil society and political culture at a regional scale, becomes a central reference for thinking about law as a social relationship that allows analysis, management and transformation conflicts. A relevant case is that of the Yucatan Peninsula, which concentrates great sociocultural and geographic diversity, in addition to urban centers with high demographic growth and points of national and international tourist attraction that have favored the local economy but also the emergence of integration conflicts, in addition to an important social and environmental impact.

The Sociological point of view requires both methodological and theoretical flexibility to fully understand societies different for their contextual elements, such as geography or former history, relation to the rest of the world, cultural diversity, traditions. All of them are important components to explain social relations, institutional growth, rooted structures and many other complex problems and trends. Thechapter proposes some wide research subjects about the state of Yucatan to arouse the interest of new generations of social scientists about the region. The subjects proposed come out from a local dynamism that frequently finds unexpected consequences or obstacles derived from those hidden structures or other elements present. All of it becomes important material of analysis for the social sciences.

The following paper takes up the results reported by the initiative Women: diaspora and return in two projects carried out during 2018 and 2019 in the cities of Bogotá and Medellín-Colombia. The participants returned to the country after living between 6 months and 20 years as migrants. Through thematic analysis and an intersectional lens, we revisited the experiences documented by the initiative to identify possible psychosocial impacts of return, as well as potential contributions to current debates on migration policies in our country. We found that beyond race-class and gender, it is also important to inquire about age at return, as well as to learn more about how care work may impact on the labour and social reintegration processes of returning home. We discussed the importance of inclusive migration policies that consider the diverse realities of women returnees, as well as the need to strengthen social and labour support networks. It is suggested that an intersectional perspective be incorporated into future research and actions in order to address the complexities of women’s return migration in a comprehensive and equitable manner.
