The article stems from the researches developed for a master thesis in the field of smart cities, aiming to understand the emergency of participatory ways to manage the urban space taking into account the several actors who take place in the city dynamics. As a main case study, the São Paulo Urban Mobility Lab (MobiLab), the study presents new possibilities to produce urban innovation, building a smarter city through the inclusion of the several agents involved in the processes to produce intelligence and public policies from the bottom to up, so as to be reproduced with low cost in the whole process.

Description of the experience of Auroville, an Intentional Community in southeastern India, called by some an alternative community, by others an ecovillage or even a sustainable city (although there are questionings about whether it is a city or a neighborhood), where one seeks the environmental regeneration of a territory destroyed by centuries of inadequate management. Based on observations from the author’s visit to Auroville, on information collected in relatedbibliography and on some questionings on what can be inferred from the experience, this article seeks to present some of the history and characteristics of that Intentional Community, understood as a transformation of the a landscape that has been taking place for five decades, continually updating itself, and where several experiments have been and are being carried out. The founding principles of Auroville are presented, and also the initial project and its transformation over time, the regeneration of the landscape there undertaken, highlighting the importance of water management, the weight of experience as a whole in a spiritual intuition, management of food production, the modality of property practiced, constructive techniques and some financial issues.

The book Der moderne Zweckbau, written by Adolf Behne in 1923, reveals fundamental discussions for the understanding (and conduction) of Modern Architecture in the 1920s. In this book, the author identifies three courses or categories of thoughts, and explores them to compose the three fundamental chapters of the book. The first chapter, which is the object of this paper and, in part, translated, emphasizes the denial of established formal principles, and highlights the return to purpose and function to generate a living architecture. The effect of this operation resets the concept of building, freeing it from a static and prescribed condition. Behne relies on Frank Lloyd Wright ́s houses from the 1900s to develop his argument, and ends up writing an accurate text about Wright’s design procedures, pointing to features that would only get accentuated in the work of the American ́s architect during the 1930s and 40s.

The aim of this research is to develop an analysis method of contemporary urban mobility from the perspective of a person and his/her private understanding of the capacity of the environment into which he/she is inserted as central elements of this phenomenon. Parting from the concepts of no-place, heterotopia, topology, proxemics and semiotics, an analysis system was devised of the informational and interpersonal specificities stemming from public spaces and edified with different formal, functional and special characteristics. The results indicate that these concepts are based on the semantic perception method by means of the elaboration of a concentric-radial diagram based on the image analysis of the city, which allows synthesizing the innumerable qualitative interpretations of urban mobility from a specific point of view each person.

This text gives rise to a series of articles on what is Architecture. This first approach is an article pub-lished in 1958 by the prestigious US magazine The Architectural Forum, in which Frank Lloyd Wright (1887-1959) precisely defined what he understoodto be Architecture. The magazine reported that the text was an extract from the lectures given by Wright in London in 1939. However, after careful study of the text, we realized that the information on the source of the material was inaccurate, which led us to a more detailed research of the original texts that comprise the published extract. This ar- ticle also brings the translation into Portuguese of the material.

The valuation of non-motorized modes of transport has been evident in the federal, state and municipal government spheres, and has stimulated the discussion on cycling mobility, where, amidst the chaos in urban mobility caused by the automobilebased circulation model, governments to include in a significant way public policies, legislation and actions aimed at cycling mobility with new alternatives to problems associated with urban mobility. However, there is a gap in Brazil regarding the need to establish criteria to evaluate the evolution of the implementation of policies and actions of cycling mobility in municipalities. In this way, the study proposes, based on Brazilian legislation and national and international experiences, to establish criteria that allow the evaluation of the policies and actions of cyclomobilization implemented, in order to be an applicable instrument in the municipalities.

The present work aims to study the causes of abandonment, sale and rental of the housing in the vertical condominiums among the program “Minha Casa, Minha Vida”, for families with income up to three minimum wages, in the municipality of São José dos Campos. The study consists of a bibliographical survey and interviews with the agents involved, analyzing the origin and socioeconomic profile of the beneficiaries, as well as the process of change and adaptation to life in condominium. As a final result it will be possible to demonstrate that the PMCMV partially solves the problem of the housing deficit, but does not exempt the families from the situation of social vulnerability, often motivating them to leave their dream home.

The paper proposes the discussion about the disciplinary research on architecture based on the analysis of the experiences brought by seven exhibitions proposed by Francesco Moschini in the gallery A.A.M. Architettura Arte Moderna, in which the architecture design proves to be crucial for the reflection on architecture making.

This paper presents a didactic experience that exercises environmental perception strategies and formal design in landscape architecture. The exercise, applied in the first period of the Architecture and Urbanism course of the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPEL), in the discipline Fundamentals of Project Practice, adopts a didactic path of initial sensitization of the student for the apprehension of a project repertory from different working methods. The preexisting university courtyard, free space chosenfor the intervention, represents a place of daily use, scrutinized from a participative interpretation by the collectives that live the university environment. The article demonstrates the methodological procedures applied to the stages of the design process for the patio requalification. it starts with the application of post-occupation evaluation techniques; apprehension of formal and composition repertoire with support of visual form reading instruments, environmental perception and reference analysis. The conception stage integrates the drawing and the physical study model to exercise compositional ability, reconciling geometric principles, formal operations, spatial organization and digital modeling at different scales. The experience represents, therefore, an initiation to the design process in the academic atelier, under the pluralistic approach of the landscaping, illustrated through the student production.

This article discusses the RIBA's recent exhibition:Circling the Square: Mies van der Rohe and James Stirling which offers a renewed examination of two iconic architectural schemes proposed for the same site in the City of London. Mies van der Rohe’s unrealised Mansion House Square and it’sbuilt successor, Number One Poultry by James Stirling, were both commissioned by architectural patron and developer Lord Peter Palumbo and represent a unique opportunity to draw comparisons between the design methods and solutions of two of the most highly regarded architects of the 20th century. The planning history of the two schemes spans over five decades from the 1960s to the 1990s, providing a fascinating insight into a complex and transitional period in the history of British architecture which saw the successive rise and fall of modernism and postmodernism, and the growth of an influential conservation movement. Intended to replace an eclectic block of Victorian listed buildings, both schemes were opposed by heritage groups and subjected to high-profile public inquirie to decide their fate. Debate over the value of Britain’s late twentieth century architectural heritage continues to the present day, with the recent controversial listing of Number One Poultry.
