A new type of appropriation of urban spaces is emerging in São Paulo, Brazil. The use of bicycles, the planting of communal gardens and the organization of street parties are part of a phenomenon that gains strength along with direct action of urban activism. These groups aim to discuss the everyday life in cities and seek new ways of building urban spaces. This paper analyzes territories that resistance groups occupy as part of their direct actions and activism. The “Minhocão” is currently a public space with two functions: a highway with 2.1 miles in length that people use as an urban park at night and in weekends. “Parque Augusta” is a private plot of land neighbors and collectives claim as a public green area. As a strategy to preserve the remaining vegetation of the Atlantic Forest, a coalition of activists occupied the land and organized art and culture activities. The urban space becomes a scene of conflicts, with playful developments and political disputes.

Todd Lanier Lester is a founding member of Lanchonete.org, and Paula Van Erven came onboard in the last two years of its five-year project, which questions the Right to the City. They consider urban artistic intervention and community organizing in São Paulo against the backdrop of their respective experiences. Lanchonete.org is an artist-led, cultural platform lasting for five years and focused on how people live and work in, navigate and share the contemporary city with the Center of São Paulo as our outlook. It gets its name from the ubiquitous lunch counters—con-vivial, fluorescent-lit, open-walled, laborious, points of commerce—that populate almost every street corner. Lanchonete.org is about the issues that big cities face, the different forms of ‘urban power’, and the Right to the City, but not insomuch as to define these construct, but to stretch the ‘platform’ as far as is necessary to consider diverse viewpoints.

Based on a theoretical framework that emphasizes the political character of the dispute on the city, this article proposes a better understanding of the symbolic materialities that take part on this dispute. A historical perspective on the rise of participation within the traditionally technocratic field of urban planning in Brazil sets out the technical and the participatory as conflicting discourses within decision making processes related to urban space production. Meanwhile the institutionalized participatory process related to the proposal of an Urban Operation Consortium in the city of Belo Horizonte serves as a backdrop for pointing out the relevance of such dispute. It is a dispute not only between these two discourses, but also on the meaning of these concepts – technical and participatory – as an essential pathway for a more democratic production of space.

This paper presents and analyses the recent slum upgrading experiences in the city of Jundiaí - Sao Paulo State, from 2010 to 2017, funded by the following federal programs: Programa de Aceleração do Crescimento – Assentamentos Precários and Programa Minha Casa Minha Vida. These actions took place in 4 informal settlements: Jardim São Camilo, Jardim Novo Horizonte, Parque Centenário and Vila Ana. Their urban design and housing architecture are examples of diversity, representative of the work developed by Fundação Municipal de Ação Social (FUMAS), the local office responsible by social housing policy. Based on design information, field visit and FUMAS’s technicians interviews, we developed an analytical perspective of the 4 experiences and the housing police implemented. As a result, we argue that most of the solutions were succes-sful but many constraints remained. While the City Statute (2001) empowered the municipality as the leader of the urban development and the responsible for the social housing policy, the support of federal financial resources enable the city to develop unique solutions to each community, shifting the current paradigm of social housing as a single and uniform response to the different housing problems.

Quality of life in urban areas is often influenced by the existence of public open spaces. These places are co-responsible for the urban vitality and dynamics of the cities. Nevertheless, contemporary city planning is reflecting a contradictory distance from issues regarding social factors in urban open spaces. This is noticed by the amount of city space dedicated to buildings and roads. This paper recognizes the importance of public open spaces to the cities and addresses efforts to study a proposal for an urban reconciliation of a residual streetscape area, located in the Central region of Vila Velha municipality, in the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil. This area has great potential for a new public open space to attend local needs, able to reverse the rupture created by the infrastructure works that covered the Bigossi canal. The chosen strategy resulted in a linear park design, an academic project developed in the last year of the undergraduate program in architecture and urban planning. The design proposed a plural open space that embraced multiple activities and services configured to join people, environment and the city all together.

EntreVilas could be seen as the first interactive documentary to delve into the context of company-towns and urbanization in São Paulo, discussing in this context, the historical and current relationships between work and housing. In a period where social and daily relationships are built in the virtual world, providing the user different experiences of immersion in historical contexts could be an outlet for the promotion of their valuation. This is one of the intentions of the interactive documentary Entre Vilas: allow the user to browse through the historical and contemporary layers of the Company-towns of São Paulo city, revealing their historical reports and the current conformation, telling by its residents, constructing in this way, the economic, social and spatial conformation of São Paulo. In this sense, the project discusses the relationships between work, housing and memory, recording the context in which these villages were built, as well as their relevance along the urban expansion process. The article analyzes the trajectory of part of the company-towns located in the capital, between the years 1867-1959, narrating in this way from the sanitary norms to the main events, social, political, economic and many other characteristics involved in this process of development.

This article seeks to show the strategic role of the belvedere as a tool to raise awareness among its inhabitants of the island ‘s environmental issues, as well as to take advantage of Florianópolis’ turism potential and the articulation of the attractions system. To produce this analysis, pilot interviews were developed with the purpose of systematizing the needs and preferences of visitors during the use and appropriation of the public free space of Mirante do Morro da Cruz - Florianópolis, SC; as well as in relation to some elements and attributesof valuation of the local landscape. The theme of the use and appropriation of Morro da Cruz Belvedere is approached from the point of view of urban ecology. Pilot interviews are drawn up on the basis of Lynch’s (1999) questions which are attached.

This paper presents an analysis of Espaço Natura, designed by the architect Roberto Loeb, focusing on the circulation system. The premise is that circulation is an integral part of the architectural program, and expresses fundamental concepts about the formal and spatial design of the project. The intention is to demonstrate the design strategies that guided the project. Thus, from the appreciation of the circulation system, it was possible to identify spatial qualities resulting from the valorization of the internal and external paths, the visuals and the space-time-movement relation of the users. The results show procedures adopted by the architect that made it possible to overcome the merely functional activities of an industry.

SUMMARYNew City: old practices. Differentiation in the appropriation and use of urban space in the new city. In this article we report on processes of differentiation in the appropriation and use of urban space in the new city, in San Pedro of Jujuy in northern Argentina. Processes that lead to the reproduction of what we call old practices in new areas of development, keeping the model of fragmentation and social segregation present in other cities of Jujuy. We investigate, how the inhabitants of the new town hijack and use spaces playing models of segregation and socio-spatial fragmentation, in a dialectical relationship than it feeds and strengthens, as new neighborhoods are strengthened. Here the intervention of the State, at different levels, far from achieving the goal of decent housing for all citizens, served to enhance these processes of segregation.
