This article aims to discuss the role of Wax Prints in ethnic affirmation politics through fashion in Rio de Janeiro. Based on Hobsbawm and Ranger’s (1997) and Lívio Sansone’s (2005) studies we analyse how these prints convey ideas of tradition and origin associated with the Afro-Brazilian ethnicity, materializing the representation of the African continent. We became aware of how important it is to black social movements to adopt objects of the material African or Afro-Brazilian cultures as a way of expressing their political ideas directly related to ethnic identities. The article reveals results from the qualitative research that has been carried out with Afro-Brazilian fashion designers who use Wax print fabrics confirming their intentional use by its language potential pointed out by Barthes (2005).

The present article has the objective to understand and measure the Brazilian scientific research in the area of textiles in Scielo database. In this effort, a bibliometric research to measure results was conducted taking into account the indexed articles from the Scielo database; a bibliographic research was also carried out to interpret the results from the former. It was verified that the areas with the higher number of publications are chemistry, environment and management. Considering that Brazil offers one of the world’s most complete environmental legislation, being also the fifth larger textile manufacturer, the interest for publications in these areas is justified. However, there is a gap in areas of culture and heritage.

This paper is part of the research on the Being of Fashion. The ontology of fashion defines itself in relation to a dressed or adorned body; therefore, to a non dressed body or robes without a body. In this ontological relationship with the Being of Fashion, the focus is the wearable artifact as the founder of a social and dressed being. During the research process we found Sartor Resartus, written in 1834 by Thomas Carlyle. This book is an existentialist novel based on the philosophy of clothes. Even if the author ironizes the topic, his aim is not to promote an attack on fashion, but to bring the idea of a society based on clothes.

Social psychology is a branch of psychology which is on the threshold of psychology and sociology. It is a field with wide application, since it studies the human action in diverse situations, and it involves the relation of the individual with a group. In this way, this paper aimed to present some of the great themes of social psychology (self, attitudes and behavior, group influence, culture and values, personality, emotions, and social neuroscience) and demonstrate the feasible interfaces of these topics with fashion. Through a bibliographical research it is shown that there is a possibility of dialogue between the theories of social psychology and fashion. Finally, we suggest research topics in which the exposed themes can contribute to studies developed in the field of fashion.

This article aims to discuss the possible meanings of old age, based on the mediatization of a social movement: the acceptance and use of white hair by women in Brazil, especially in the dissemination of this content in the virtual space. The starting point is the assumption of the existence of a recurring connection in Brazilian society between ageing and white hairs. The article discusses the new meanings evidenced in the selected publications, problematizing the theme in the following way: how women mediate new cultural/aesthetic patterns regarding theirappearance?

This paper aims, through a bibliographic research, to discuss the censorship of non-authorized copies, considering fashion industry production and intellectual property legislation. This text is part of a Contemporary Studies PhD research (LOPES, 2017) linked with the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research of the University of Coimbra. The censorship related to copy practice in fashion industry arises from a resistance due to its strong power of transgression, access to the production system and the socialization of consumption.

What is the cause of body movement? Is it only physical? Is it pure will? In her performances, Ola Maciejewska slightly shifts the terms of these questions which particularly concern contemporary living arts. By adapting the use of a specific accessory – a large piece of fabric or drapery – strongly inspired by Loïe Fuller’s avant-garde serpentine dance, she questions the interactions between body and artifact, human and non-human. What if a non-human movement or strength could influence, work, even reinvent body’s potentialities? Thanks to drapery, Maciejewska overcomes the traditional dichotomy between the body usually associated with activity and the inert accessory, both to feel and to test the body’s limits. She suggests the essential hybridity of our body as well as the no less essential subversive function of what we bear or wear.

This work investigates two items of clothing and the relations constructed between their fashionable and disruptive manifestations: the Corset and the Veil. Examining the societies which are emblematic of those practices – the Victorian Era and the Tuareg, from Northern Africa – the works of Greimas and Landowski will provide a framework for a Semiotic and Socio-semiotic analysis of the practices of tightlacing and male veiling as opposing practices to traditional gender roles. Even though the two practices forming the corpus of this work are geographically and chronologically distant, our analysis forms a parallel between them, exposing how the mechanism of Otherness through clothing occurs similarly at different times and locations, as well as the importance of Fashion in creating and sustaining prevalent ideologies.
