The article retraces the history of an engraved portrait of Emperor Pedro I, produced between 1824 and 1831, in Brazil’s first years as an independent nation. The analysis of the engraving has three parts: it starts relating its visual elements to the contradictions of Brazilian political emancipation; it mobilizes written sources to track its production and circulation as an artifact; and finally it describes the threshold of a new patrimonial cycle of this image in the late 1800s. The hypothesis is that the setbacks faced by the portrait followed the nation-state formation process.

The celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Italian immigration in Rio Grande do Sul, in 1925, were an important moment in the memory building of the migration phenomenon. The article aims to analyze the content of the representation madri d’Italia found in the celebrations’ book and to understand what were the expectations of women’s public action in the Italian ethnic community. The photographs are a privileged source to understand in depth the twofold conception of the migrant women model.

The article intends to show how the theoretical-analytical paradigms expressed by the binomial "respect/reputation" and "home/street", which Caribbean and African American literature has long recorded and used as an ideal reference for masculinity and femininity within the socio-cultural contexts in question, reveal themselves, in the light of the facts, inadequate to understand and describe the reality of the Dominican bateyes.

As an anomalous and transgressive novel, Jorge Barón Biza’s The Desert and Its Seed (1998) has become a classic of Argentine literature in recent decades. In this paper we are interested in approaching its reading based on its link with that “Gothic mode” read by critics as a perverse nucleus omnipresent in Rio de la Plata literary tradition. We will focus on two aspects that could be considered cardinal: (a) the uncanny representation of the Italian and (b) the recurring motif in Argentine literature of the decline of old oligarchic families.

The myth of Malinche, historically associated in Mexico with the imaginary of the "traitor indigenous woman" has established itself as a powerful symbolism in the discourses of the visual, performing and literary arts, some of which will be reviewed in this article through a critical analysis that intersects contextual elements, with historical events and current scopic conditions; to think about the hegemonic discursive potential of said myth; as well as its dismantling, and the factors that allow it to unfold and configure antagonistic and subversive messages.

This article analyzes the photographic portraits taken in Brazilian  studios in the second half of the 19th century, especially since the creation of the called “cartes de visite”, in which the focus of the images are the enslaved people. The main objective is to understand the forms of representation and self-representation of the historical narrative, as well as the visual culture and the social cycles of the image. As a methodology, I adopted imagery analysis, based on the concepts developed in the bibliography, such as the Appeased Violence of Mariana Muaze (2017).

The photo-essay Destino Final by Giancarlo Ceraudo, an Italian documentary photographer, was inspired by an impossible question: where are the planes of the death flights? What was originally intended only as a political photography project becomes a judicial investigation which, with the indispensable help of Miriam Lewin, journalist, human rights activist and former desaparecida, leads to the identification of the planes and the conviction of the pilots. By investigating the shadows, Ceraudo sheds light on one of the key moments in Argentinian history.

The essay studies Huarcaya's "amazograms" from the category of the sublime. In his attempt to represent greatness, the jungle permeates the paper, altering the classical conventions of photographic art. The images are sublime because they lack precise limits and account for a disruptive force that tries to capture itself as a limit. They are images that both return to the origins of photographic tradition and testify to what is left of nature in the context of a utilitarian rationality that no longer knows an outside.

In An Apartment on Uranus: Chronicles of the Crossing Paul Preciado presents a scene that he describes as a "usual event" in the lives of trans people when showing their official IDs. Upon that, and based on Judith Butler's questioning of Louis Althusser's Theory of Interpellation, this article reflects on the modes of constitution of the subject, the subjection that this entails, and the alternative that Preciado puts forward in his own transition process.
