This study analysed the gender dynamics prevailing in the context of early childhood education in Portugal. We sought to observe whether male early childhood educators experience the negative consequences associated with tokens and the possible emergence of phenomena related to the social construction of masculinity. The thematic analysis of the contents of 14 semi-structured individual interviews with early childhood educators originated six themes and highlighted the specificity of the professional insertion of men. The experiences and strategies described by the male interviewees and perceived by the female interviewees highlight the effects of the social construction of masculinity and confirm part of the effects of their status as tokens, although differently to the ways revealed by studies focused on women in this situation.

This article presents an integrative summary of conceptions, policies and practices of teacher induction during teachers’ early career stage, based on a systematic literature review. The purposes for this review were: to analyze the teacher induction trends featured in international research; to discuss the correspondence, integration and independence relations between mentorship and induction; to understand the place of teacher induction programs and policies within the reviewed research; and, finally, to systematize the production of knowledge about the subject with regard to prevailing theory and methodological approaches.

This study explores Art Education in Early Childhood Education curricula in ten countries – Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic – from the theories of critical pedagogy and multiculturalism. To this purpose, a qualitative content analysis of the curricula and 25 interviews with experts were carried out. The results indicate that the multicultural approach is generally present in Latin American curricula, but despite this, in many cases it is not transferred to the artistic field. It is proposed to incorporate values in Art Education and to strengthen the concept of hybrid identity; to do so, it is necessary to reinforce teacher training.

The gender counter-revolution, driven by the Franquist dictatorship, is also reflected in the History textbooks. The quantitative study of women in the manuals shows not only the reduction of their presence, but also the strengthening of stereotypes that justifies their sidelining from power. The textbooks reaffirm the maternal vocation of women, which is the foundation of their calling, as renunciation and love. They recreate a femininity made of beauty, irrationality, and fragility. Women of power or action have to be tamed and sent back to the private domain as soon as possible. Their intervention in history must be only exceptional and fleeting, as it is important that they do not acquire an exemplary value, and do not endanger the boundaries between the genders.

This paper aims to present possibilities for monitoring access to daycare at the municipal level. As a methodological strategy, education provision rates were calculated using enrollment data from the school census and population data calculated through the ratio-correlation method. Results showed that, on average, municipalities serve 32.2% of children aged up to 3 years, and inequalities related to location and socioeconomic context were found. The methodology showed a potential for helping with the annual monitoring of daycare access in municipalities of the country.

This study aims to analyze contemporary educational discursiveness by an exploratory immersion in 1,165 interviews given by prominent figures in education and other related fields. These interviews were published in ten Brazilian magazines of educational publicization between 1986 and 2019. Based on Foucauldian theory, the study mobilized two strategies to analyze the data regarding the interviewees and the subjects addressed, with emphasis on cataloging some key statements found during the research procedures. The results of this study show the circulation of certain normative rationalities in the wake of multiple calls to professionals, generating unsuspected effects on the educational ethos.

This article discusses the possibilities for research groups to serve as educational time-spaces for consolidating praxis in supervision in graduate education programs. New advising strategies and initiatives are observed in an environment characterized by internal demands and external inductions to the graduate programs and their supervisors. A study with 562 research group leaders who work as professors in doctoral programs in education collected data about the organization, functioning and advising practices in their groups. The data highlight the general research and supervision strategies in particular, and the perceptions of the respondents about the potential of the research groups for training researchers and supervisors.

This article aims to analyze the main characteristics of the Brazilian production on school principals in the last three decades. Fourty studies were analyzed, in a universe of 691 works on school management, published in the country from 1989 to 2019. The studies were developed by 65 authors, from 37 institutions, mostly in the Southeast region, and dealt with seven central categories. Principals’ selection and training concentrated the largest number of studies. Finally, they used, for the most part, qualitative methodology, focusing on document review and discourse analysis.

As a cross-section of a master’s research project, this article presents and analyzes the militarization processes of Brazilian public schools until December 2019. To this end, it presents a mapping indicating the respective federative units of the schools, their administrative ties (municipal or state), and the military body responsible for guarding the unit after militarization (military police, military firefighter corps, or other militarized arrangement). This is, therefore, a panoramic approach focused on national exposition and analysis of the data. The systematization of the data shows a preponderance of militarized schools in the Northeast, Midwest, and North regions. It is found, therefore, that until 2019 it was a more widespread policy in the poorest localities of the country.

Based on quantitative data, interviews and literature on gender, science & technology, and the sociology of education and work, the text addresses the shortage of women as students and professors in the Mechanical Engineering program at a higher education institution in Northeastern Brazil. Six female students who entered the program in 2012 are monitored, up to the present. The analysis of their trajectories, obstacles, and personal and professional perspectives illustrates how the gender filter operates in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. It indicates the challenges of including a gender perspective to achieve gender parity in higher education and the labor market.
