Resumen
The starting point of the article is the universal dimension of the Gospel, as the foun- dation of the universality of Christianity. In the deepening of what this universality may mean, is explored the distinction between universality, as the basis of difference, and totality, as the origin of uniformity. It is from there that, on the one hand, a rela- tionship can be established between the universal vocation of Christianity and the process of globalization, which overcomes the reducing tribalism; and, on the other hand, it is perceived that a totalizing and uniformizing globalization does not corres- pond to the Christian sense of universality, which is personalizing and, therefore, dif- ferentiating, from personal and cultural concrete.

This text is about the connection between the path of the Church of Latin America from Medellin and the Exhortation of John Paul II 31 years later, which extends the options of Medellin to all of America, North and South. We will make our reflection only on some highlights of this dense and important document, since it is impossible within the limits of this text, to cover everything. We will privilege some paragraphs and some aspects too. And this choice and selection will have to do with the context of Latin America, the south of this unique America that the Church desires united in a single vocation of fraternity.

Resumen
This article emerges from the thesis for the Degree in Theology with a Specialization in Church History, entitled: The Catechisms of Sarmiento. Contextualization and comment, defended in June 2019. We propose here to glimpse how Christianity, accor- ding to Sarmiento’s conception, has a leading role in the conformation of the civilized and the barbaric; the Christian religion as an element or note of civilization or barba- rism. This approach will be based on an analysis of Sarmiento’s books: Facundo o civilización y barbarie, Recuerdos de provincia y La conciencia de un niño written betwe- en 1840 and 1850.

Lucio Gera fue su primer director.
