The present article is aimed at situating the problem of eroticism in the decade of the 60s in Argentine women’s press. This implies a historical-cultural contextualization within a framework of cultural studies, genres and sexualities and mediatizations research. The category of eroticism has played a silent role in the social sciences. As a topic has been kept in the margins perhaps because of the weight of the heritage of religious culture that has defined it as a prohibited subject. Neutralized, the category has often been undermined by that of sexuality –closely associated with sexual or gender duality–. At discursive level and within the framework of mass culture, it was a topic of symbolic dispute in the 1960s. The decible and the visible about eroticism underwent mutations, weaving a caesura that resignificated the problematic, redefining the unspeakable, within the configuration of an era. Semiotic-discursive regimes indicated not only what society could and should see about eroticism, but how it should be viewed. Discursive and semiotic constructions in feminine press constituted a moderate visualization of this aspect of social life.

The last years of the XIX century in Buenos Aires witnessed important changes both in the field of graphics, with the introduction of new techniques, circulation of printed objects and images, as well as in the perception and experience of the city. The transformations of space, both public and private, and their representations, account for new practices of sociability, new meanings and the formation of a new visual culture around the “metropolis” and “progress”. The railway, as transport and technology, but also as a visible mark in space, will also play a role in these changes, and its representations will be closely linked with them. The printed image, beyond its multiple relationships with the artistic field, has its own characteristics in terms of its modes of production (more or less handmade, more or less industrial), its materiality (inserted in various supports, multiple, with greater or lesser link to a textual discourse), and circulation networks involved. In this direction, it is proposed to think in which particular ways the printed images appeared in this context were related to the perception and experience of space, new technologies and urban consumption.

This article explores the visual coverage of past and contemporary events offered by the illustrated journal Correo del Domingo during its first years of publication (1864-1866), particularly in relation to the Triple Alliance War (1865-1870). Given that the journal was one of the first publications in the region to offer forms of visual journalism, the first part of the essay analyzes the blurry boundaries between lithographs of informative, journalistic purpose and those of more markedly fictional nature. The second part of the article argues that the journal takes advantage of the malleable uses of the lithographic image to overcome the visual coverage problems of a war that did not dovetail with the official discourse of heroism and patriotism that the journal supported.

Nowadays the electronic media seem to be winning the game. Tablets, cell phones, computers, keep us constantly connected and much of what we read comes to us through a digital path. But in spite of all predictions, the printed media still persists. The paper pillar coexists with screens in streets, squares or trains. And in different formats, we submerge, engrossed, in it’s lecture.

As it is well known, Tinder and Grindr are apps whose main function is to produce the possibility of an intimate encounter between sexual subjects. This article proposes an analysis of the argumentative, polyphonic and dialogical functioning of a specific discursive operation type, used for the presentation of the self in these discursive devices: the denial. In the light of the analytical categories provided by the theory of social discourses (Verón, 1997, Traversa, 2014) the dialogical approach to argumentation and polyphony (García Negroni, 2016, García Negroni & Libenson, 2014, 2016), the theory of enunciative polyphony (Ducrot, 1984) and of the theory of the semantic blocks (Carel & Ducrot, 2005), I will characterize the dialogical-argumentative configurations that the denial discourse adopts when the self introduces itself. We conclude that the denial enables at least two general interpretations on how the negative statement relates to the otherness: a descriptive interpretation of the self that emerges from different types of dialogical rejection responses that the negative statement manifests against stereotyped argumentative doxal discourses attributed to an impersonal and plural voice (SE), or an interpretation as a requirement that arises from the metadiscursive restriction that establish the negative statements in relation to potential future discourses of the other.

The point of departure of this article is the growing attention to affect as an important aspect of political participation, particularly in the context of online media’s role in democracy and public spheres. The approach is to pull together a broad range of research and analysis on participation, public spheres and affect, with the aim of highlighting important gains as well as issues and ambiguities. In addressing this cluster of interrelated concerns, we do not find a cumulative body of unified knowledge, but rather strands from various traditions. While this may present some difficulties, it may serve also to encourage us to reflect on our own premises. The first section deals with the concept of participation, arguing for a robust view that sees it an intervention, however small, into power relations. The second section pursues the notion of affect, framing it within the force-field of rationality and emotionality that has been a traditional motif within democracy theory. The third section focuses on the online environment, in particular social media, highlighting some of the lingering ambivalences of online participation and their relevance for affect. The final section offers some brief reflections on affect and populism, including the theme of legitimate public pathways to knowledge.

In the academic debate, the discussions about the public have been raised since the first conceptualizations made between the end of the 50s and the beginning of the 60s of the 20th century by Hannah Arendt and Jürgen Habermas in their classic books The Human Condition and History and criticism of public opinion, respectively. The questions, attenuations and responses to these proposals were not slow to appear. To that set of proposals (which several authors of this volume recover and problematize) are added today the different arguments that have been precipitated in relation to the recent changes that occurred in the configuration of the public sphere, especially those related to the development of the process historical of mediatization.
