Marketing of books in America, and especially in Mexico, was an important economic activity contributing to Spain’s industrial development from the 1920s forward, as it undertook the difficult task of enriching the cultural landscape. Publishing works by both Spanish and Mexican authors, Espasa-Calpe was among the first publishing houses to open in Mexico. This study provides an overview of the development of Espasa-Calpe Mexicana from its founding in 1927 until the end of the Franco dictatorship in 1975. By examining the distinct stages of its growth, this paper provides new insights into the history of publishing in both Spain and Mexico.

Touching on the research paper: “Terminology of library and information science in Latin America: a comparative study”; this article presents an overview of some aspects of the state of library and information science training at universities in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. The paper examines aspects of the development of library and information science training, the fields of knowledge governing librarianship education in Latin America, as well as the names given to this type of training in universities included in the research sample. For purposes of this research report, library science and librarianship are considered synonymous. As such, research employing either term is included in the research sample.

This analysis of the work of Professor Roberto Antonio Gordillo Gordillo is offered in the spirit of paying respect to the pioneers of Mexican Library Science. Not intended as a biography, this paper provides and overview of the writings and academic lectures of this important figure. Professor Gordillo was a notable teacher of professional library specialists and promoter of professional associations, including the Mexican Library Association and the National College of Librarians. In the history of Mexican library science, Professor Gordillo is a worthy representative and one of its keypillars.

This paper identifies and describes several aspects associated with storage of digital files in the cloud. A definition of the cloud is ventured and its major features detailed in order to distinguish advantages, disadvantages and limitations that must be taken into account when information is stored in the cloud. Several recommendations are provided for higher education institutions tasked with planning the architecture to be deployed for organizing digital files using the cloud computing.

Obra muy completa, didáctica y profusamente ilustrada en materia de encuadernaciones artísticas de los siglos XVI, XVII, XVIII, XIX y XX que las identifica, estudia y describe, y que pertenecen en su mayoría a colecciones de unidades de información españolas (bibliotecas y archivos).

En este trabajo se presenta una propuesta de enseñanza-aprendizaje para el tema del cambio químico en educación secundaria obligatoria (9º grado) utilizando analogías como eje vertebrador. Se trataba no solo de aprender modelos para representar sustancias e interpretar el cambio químico, sino también desarrollar competencias relacionadas con los procesos de elaboración de modelos en química. Se presenta primero la estructura y fundamentos de la propuesta, para más tarde pasar a mostrar una crónica de su implementación con una muestra de 15 estudiantes de ese nivel. Como instrumento de recogida de información se utilizó en diario del profesor y el porfolio del alumno. El análisis efectuado permite comprobar la utilidad de las analogías como recurso para procesos de intervención didáctica que intentan promover un aprendizaje significativo del cambio químico, tanto a nivel teórico como en relación a los procesos de modelización implicados y a un conocimiento adecuado sobre la naturaleza de los modelos en química.

In this paper, the authors present the results of nonlinear dynamic analyses of twelve building models designed according to a methodology based upon the force method, capacity design principles and the concept of structural fuses to achieve resilient seismic designs for special moment-resisting steel frames with hysteretic energy dissipation devices mounted on chevron steel bracing. It is demonstrated that the resilient design mechanism previously checked with pushover analyses is also attained for most studied models with nonlinear dynamic analyses using an acceleration record which is compatible with the elastic design spectrum. Also, it is corroborated that the planned second line of inelastic defense is activated if the seismic action surpasses the considered design spectrum. Based upon the obtained results, it is confirmed that it is possible to perform a resilient seismic design for the studied system under the proposed methodology, even for tall and slender buildings. Therefore, the proposed initial stiffness ratio parameters and the global design parameters previously proposed by the authors to use in a code-oriented force method can be used with confidence for the resilient seismic design of this structural system.

The load factors and load combinations established in the Mexico City Building Code (MCBC) and its Complementary Technical Standards are revised. New load and resistance factors are proposed to be specified in the next version of the MCBC. The combination of gravitational loads are considered (dead load plus live load) and the combination of earthquake load is also reviewed. A reliability-based development of load factors for the combination of seismic and gravity loads is presented. The procedure aims at minimizing the total expected life-cycle cost of buildings having a minimum value of probability of failure equal to the implicit probability in the MCBC. The structural reliability is estimated using Artificial Neural Networks.

El presente ensayo aborda, con la finalidad de aplicar el concepto de resiliencia a un modelo de evaluación de los procesos de gestión integral urbano-turística y patrimonial, el proceso de desarrollo y manejo turístico que predominó en Morelia (Michoacán, México) desde el año 2001 hasta finales del 2016. Se plantea que esta ciudad, capital del estado, cuyo centro histórico es reconocido como patrimonio mundial desde 1991 (UNESCO-WHC 1991:24), se ha de sobreponer a las situaciones de tensión que motivaron su declive turístico en el 2008, a la par de que se señalan los escenarios adversos que se presentan cíclicamente, aún predominantes, que han limitado el crecimiento turístico sostenible de esta emblemática ciudad.
