The so-called spiritualist photography was for a long time a sort of visual document practically forgotten by historians, critics and the general public. At the international level, since the end of the last century, different studies have claimed the interest of these images and the cultural context in which they appear. However, no equivalent studies have been carried out in Spain so far. In these circumstances, this article intends to make a first contribution to the history of this kind of photographic documents, by identifying and locating samples of this visual heritage, as well as by offering a first chronology of the main facts related to this heritage. Until now, only some images that were published in books or magazines have been found, but not originals or copies. From what has been seen so far, it seems that, in Spain, the phenomenon of the spiritualist photography had very limited scope and impact when compared to the international panorama.

This paper studies the process of ritual revaluation of missionary dramas in the sixteenth century Mexico through the formal analysis of its stage representation. Dramatizations are related to the model of rites of passage, based on the structural similarities between indigenous rituals and Christian festivities in the New World. We show that the change of the performativity value of the missionary dramas was caused by its performing within the ritual structure. That representation conditions encouraged participants to embody both dramatic roles and ritual functions during the ceremonies which interrelated the dramatic experience with the reality of living ritual. The proposed scheme is applied on two plays performed in Tlaxcala in 1538: Nacimiento de San Juan and La conquista de Jerusalén.

This paper analyzes the complaintsand protests against repartimiento mine labor in Viceroyalties of Peru and New Spain. Taking various cases of resistance, this essaya nalyzes, first, the arguments and justifications for resistance to involuntary mine labor and, secondly, the different types of dissension. Using the comparative perspective tool we contrast the specific features of these two mining worlds and the common key-point of the repartimiento mine labor, which was a indicator to differentiate between the two Viceroyalties.

This study deals with the 18th century juridical crisis in the Spanish Empire, where royal justice attempted to elevate the role of the royal courts and judges in criminal prosecutions, diminishing or eventually eliminating exceptions granted on account of judicial immunities (fuero) o privileged status. Of particular importance were both the perception of impunity caused by attention to such privileges and the fear that it would delegitimize the juridical system and cause social conflict. The struggle against ecclesiastic impunity in the case of grave crimes grew in consequence. Royal lawyers put together legal briefs to establish criminal antecedents and juridical procedure, gradually formulating concepts regarding monarchical sovereignty, the State, the clergy and citizens. Despite their contentions, royal clemency and ecclesiastical resistance —with brilliant juridical rejoinders— prevailed until 1810, yielding partially thereafter in the midst of the war of Independence. Nonetheless, a new legal codification was delayed for decades both in Spain and Mexico, since the criterion of ‘sovereign privilege’ (potestad económica) as the final right of the executive to determine due procedure, leaving ecclesiastical immunity formally intact while subject to the intromission of the civil courts and final decision by the executive.

En 1770 fray Junípero Serra fundó la misión de San Carlos Borromeo, en las inmediaciones del presidio de Monterrey (hoy Monterey), en California. Al año siguiente, la misión fue trasladada a su ubicación definitiva en el río Carmelo, entre los indios Rumsen. Mediante la transcripción y análisis de un “Confesional en Carmeleño” preparado por un anónimo misionero del Colegio de San Fernando de México (posiblemente asociado a la época de fray Junípero Serra o Juan Crespi), el artículo da a conocer un valioso testimonio de una de las lenguas nativas de California según quedó registrada por los franciscanos a finales del siglo XVIII. Este manual es un texto bilingüe, castellano-rumsen, el cual además de su valor lingüístico y etnográfico ofrece algunas pistas sobre las formas en que los misioneros identificaban algunas prácticas culturales de la población local.

Vidrieros novohispanos adecuaron la producción de vidrio a recursos y condiciones del entorno. La pureza del material pétreo y sal vegetal debió atenderse con esmero puesto que influía en la calidad del vidrio. El primer componente pudo obtenerse de haciendas dedicadas a procesar rocas con minerales y de "caleras", el segundo, de calidad diversa por variantes de la planta fue sustituido posteriormente por tequexquite y salitre, no obstante con estos últimos se fabricaba pólvora y "agua fuerte". Aunque la arquitectura de los hornos fue similar a la ibérica, el material de construcción no lo fue así; el utillaje asimismo fue semejante. El análisis de requerimientos para la fabricación de vidrio conduce a reconocer la magnitud de la inversión económica necesaria, circunstancia que influyó para que esta actividad prosperara en la ciudad de  México
