In this paper we investigate the macroeconomic factors that give rise to economic fluctuations in Puerto Rico. Using a combination of impulse response functions and variance decompositions, it is shown that the trajectory of unemployment is affected, in both the short run and the long run, by local supply and by the demand generated by the Federal Reserve through its intermediate instrument of monetary policy. In contrast, inflation is mainly affected in both the short run and long run by changes in local and external demand.

In Mexico, multidimensional poverty measures incorporate indicators of income and social entitlements. For the latter, the Social Deprivation Index consists of an equally weighted sum of six dichotomous variables showing the deprivations suffered by each individual. In this paper, a principle component analysis is carried out in order to verify if the current index requires a statisticalmodification. Redundancy is detected among the variables associated with health services and housing services. We conclude that by redefining some of the variables included in the index and readjusting the weighting would help to significantly improve this measure of multidimensional poverty.

The goal of this article is to analyze the aerospace industry in Baja California, Mexico. The methodology is based on the application of an electronic questionnaire and face-to-face in depth interviews. Our results shows that the insertion of companies has been conditioned by several factors: the basic certification is only the first step; the real challenge is to find niches of opportunity and bargaining power to achieve a productive contract, which demands entrepreneurial, legal and economic skills. This analysis is a pioneer in the study of Mexican companies participating in this emerging sector. The main limitations were the access to the companies’ information and the rejection to participate in the study. The main finding is there are very few Mexican suppliers integrated to the global value aerospace chain but if the trend of growth is maintained, it may had greater integration in the near future, and possibly a greater economic spill and technology transfer.

The aim of this paper is an analysis of the commercial policy implemented by the colonial bureaucracy on the Guarani Reductions, also the adaptations, responses and conflicts this process originated. The historical sources are analyzed from an anthropological perspective. First, the colonial commercial policies applied on the Guarani missions are put in context. Second, the controversies within the colonial administration are interpreted. Finally, indications of indigenous participation in this trade is described. The bias found in the official documents is a limitation of this study. Its value, however, lies in an analysis which brings together regulations, conflicts and indigenous agency. It is concluded that the political mediation designed to hinder the missionary population’s free access to the new commercial system had the opposite effect.

The aim of this article is to measure multidimensional poverty at the intra-urban level in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, in 2012. The methodology used was the same as that developed by Coneval in 2010 for its multidimensional measurement of poverty at the national, state and municipal levels. Territorial units of analysis (TUAs) were developed using a multivariate analysis technique to apply the methodology created by Coneval at the intra-urban level. The results make it possible to identify the TUAs in the city with greater incidence, intensity and depth of poverty. This method represents a powerful tool to design targeted public policies in the territory. Western and southeastern parts of the city exhibit greater social need. One of the main limitations of the study was the financial impossibility of expanding the survey implementation to improve the quality of the estimates.

This paper proposes to analyse the interrelation of two dynamics of territorial occupation based on American expansionism in an agroindustrial region of northwestern Mexico. The paper will analyze, from a longitudinal perspective, the colonization processes through economic development and the establishment of a Protestant religious model in the productive model and in the regional settlement of one of the most important agro-exporting zones of the northwest of Mexico. Despite limitations in the method, the work excels in connecting complex dynamics of globalization that are usually analyzed separately. The work shows the development of a colonial sense in the dynamics of territorial occupation of companies linked to agro-industry and the development of a Protestant religious field in the borders; at the same time, it identifies the dispute over the possession of a regional identity that has not remained untouched by conflicts between the local settlers.

The aim of this work is to analyze, from a comparative perspective, the political views and guidelines adopted by the Southern Common Market (Mercosur), the Andean Community of Nations (CAN), and the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) in relation to the proposals put forward to construct citizenship in the South American region between 2002 and 2016. A qualitative research methodology is used, and it is focused on the analysis of official public documents issued by the above mentioned organizations of regional integration, which follow a set of guidelines in terms of regional citizenship. The importance of the paper lies in the reflection upon the kind of citizen and the concept of citizenship that derives from the guidelines promoted by CAN, Mercosur, and Unasur. In this sense, it shows that a multiplicity of legal status hides under the category of citizenship, and that they serve as selection, hierarchization and differential inclusion mechanisms for regional migrants.

The objective of the article is to develop the theory of the necropolitical dispositif for the production and management of forced migration. The methodological design is deductive, that is, it is based on fundamentally documentary sources through which theorization was reached. Even though it has the limitations of the method, the article is innovative because it systematically analyzes subjective phenomena —migrants, deportees, displaced and asylum seekers stranded or awaiting judicial decisions that live in rubbish dumps and other similar places— and structural phenomena —political and sexual violence, impunity and economic megaprojects— to propose a theorization of forced migration as an apparatus that operationalizes a series of policies, the purpose of which is the management the death of disposable populations for the reproduction of neoliberal capitalism, both legal and criminal, and the political and social circumstances that sustain it.

The objective of this article is to demonstrate the mechanisms of complementary relationships maintained by the border cities of Posadas, Argentina and Encarnación, Paraguay. From a descriptive and diachronic approach the study argues that these cities can be interpreted as twin cities, which share a cultural and historical matrix in the regional context. Both cities apart from their specificities, present similar socio-urban aspects, and in their evolution they were involved in the same processes and problems: border flows, Mercosur policies, construction of the international bridge, Border Neighborhood Traffic Agreements, even a more unusual phenomenon, such as the effect that large infrastructure works have left on their territories. It is concluded that these cities, despite not having a common government, the economic, cultural, neighborhood and complementarity relations, generate impacts in a city and vice versa, generating interdependencies, mutual conditioning, and a specific form of inter-urban articulation.

The aim of this article is to identify whether the electoral abstention in Tijuana presents particularities given its border location and the time of residence of its citizens, as well as the characteristics of its political culture. Two sources were used for this study: a) electoral statistics for the period 1988-2016 to account for abstention trends, and b) the analysis of the results of a representative survey of the municipality. With these sources, indices and a logistical regression were developed to examine citizen opinions regarding the meaning of voting, political parties, and their ideological leanings. This study is relevant due to the growing trend towards abstention, which already is a serious and substantive problem for local electoral democracy. In political culture, native abstentionists consider voting as a form of expression regarding the functioning of the political system, and immigrant abstentionists show differential tendencies according to residence time.
