This article analyses the different projects for the integration and federation of Spanish America that were published in Mexico between 1821 and 1843. The aim is to explain the political and social motives behind these initiatives. The article argues that the architects of the Mexican projects wished to form a common defensive front to protect the precarious independence of the region, and were convinced that Mexico should occupy a leading role withinthe Spanish American community. However, some, like Lucas Alamán, also considered that the integration of Spanish American markets would permit domestic industrialization and allow Mexico Spanish American countries to join the international economic system in conditions of equality with the great economic powers.

After enacting the Constitutional Decree in Apatzingan, the Mexican Congress ceased to be a Constituent assembly. Neither the deputies themselves nor historians have pointed out clearly that, from October 1814, that legislature was a Constitutional Congress. This article gives an account of the main activities of the corporation until its dissolution in December 1815, a period of great importance for the Mexican insurgency, but of which there are very few documents.

The Reconquista and the Batalla de Covadonga are analytical categories which occupy a central role in the Spanish national identity. Although its use is central in Spanish public opinion, and the great historical works that were published in this country during the nineteenth century, is not restricted to this geographical area. During the last decade of the nineteenth century, the 8th September –the Batalla de Covadonga’s anniversary, the event which led to the beginning of the Reconquista–, was widely celebrated by the Spanish community in Mexico city. The analysis of the press produced by this immigrant group shows a speech around these events which, in the course of a decade, added new meanings. The anniversary was also evoked in an annual celebration intended to include the Mexican society, thus introducing these concepts in Mexico‘s public opinion.

This article studies the 2th of April commemoration during the last years of Porfirio Díaz government (1900-1911). The aim of this study is twofold: first, to understand and analyze some aspects of the ritual practices of politics during those years; and, second, to clarify the meanings identified with this historical event: the idea of Republic. To understand the meaning that was given officially to the concept, we study the commemoration ceremonies, both in its political ritual aspect and in its speech point of view; but the speeches has been analyzed not only the officers, but also the response that they received from the opposition newspaper of Díaz regimen. The aim is to propose an approach to the discussions on the idea of Republic in Mexico in the early twentieth century from the cultural history of politics.

This investigation analyzes, for the first time, the main characteristics of the development of chemistry in Mexico during the first two decades of the 20th century. During this period, many activities related to chemistry such as teaching, research and public and private services were mainly performed by pharmacists who graduated from the National School of Medicine in Mexico City. These pharmacists bonded in an academic, professional and social network and negotiated the necessary initiatives for the opening of the new spaces where chemistry took place, was taught, practiced and professionalized. For this reason they were recognized as the first Mexican chemists.
