Resumen
The process of conquest and Spanish colonization in America imported the monarchist attempt to impose a single identity to the indigenous, including the justice system. For that purpose, the Crown began a process of imposing forms of resolving disputes between parties, which meant the alteration of one of the cultural categories of the indigenous. However, once indigenous acculturated Hispanic justice system, they were able to integrate it into their mental categories, re-create it and manipulate it to their own interests.

Resumen
There is a common idea that the administration of justice in most of New Spain, in addition to slow and outdated, had judges generally incompetent and ignorant of the law. This paper attempts to show thatthis has to be putinto context and not always fits the reality; there were provinces where judges employed texts of primary legislation and not just common sense and manuals for apprentices. The criminal case exposed in the following pages is an example of it, as well as the technical relations between local and central justice administrations in New Spain.

Resumen
This paper focuses on the heritable nature of the right to claim a reward for services rendered to the Crown as a clue element of Spanish colonization in America. This right’s inheritance encouraged conquerors’ permanence in the new domains and a transgenerational continuity in royal service. Postponing awards requested as a compensation eased the pressure of the multiple demands on the king’s limited capacity for granting, while keeping hope that the applicant’s family would eventually receive one. In Yucatán this characteristic acquired more significance due to the economic model that prevailed in colonial times.

Resumen
Similarly to the Reformed religious sphere, the Catholic world went through a process of religious laicization, i.e., of a wider participation of lay people in devout practices and readings. In spite of the continued control of religiosity by the Church, the growth of “bourgeois” sectors (merchants, professionals, office holders, mestizo and indian caciques) strengthened the importance of values and devotions heavily influenced by lay people. This resulted in a new religious sensibility, promoted by the franciscans, jesuits and oratorians in the ambit of colleges, congregations, lay orders (órdenes terceras) and “holly schools of Christ” (santas escuelas de Cristo). This paper studies the presence of lay religiosity in the cities of New Spain through practices, the printing and circulation of devotional and meditational texts, and the spreading of the cult to new sacred images.

Resumen
This study treats the social and specifically urban context of late humanism in eighteenth-century Mexico City and New Spain. Through the careful reconstruction of the lives of particular scholars, it argues that the specific configuration of urban space (including colleges, libraries, print shops and personal dwellings) should be taken into account when understanding important monuments in the cultural history of Mexico, like the Bibliotheca Mexicana of Juan José de Eguiara y Eguren. This distinct urban culture, in turn, was influenced by larger patterns of circulation in books, ideas and people that gave the late humanist culture of Mexico City both an internal coherence and made it an integral part of a larger cultural sphere.

Resumen
From the study of two Ibero-American mining and metallurgical treatises of the 17th century, we will discover the role that printed books had in the reorganization, systematization and foundation of artisanal mining knowledge. This knowledge experienced a discrete transformation, but its broad scope in the book field led to the establishment of a modern wisdom in accordance with the schemes of the new Natural Philosophy that, during the eighteenth century, generated the emergence of the disciplines related to Chemistry. Also, we will analyze the new roles that the experience and the book learning assumed in the artisanal mining-metallurgical treatises as a new formula that claimed some aspects of the alchemical philosophy, but that was challenged in the light of the demands of the Spanish Empire and the own production of printed materialsduring early modernity.
