After Independence the Kenya Government decided to shape one nation by removing racial discrimination from the education system and providing equal opportunities to all; this was achieved by transferring the management of all secondary schools and colleges to Boards of Governors and giving them Grant-in-aid status. To keep its autonomy Strathmore College opted to operate privately. The integration of the education system enhanced certain human rights but diminished religious freedom. The experience of Strathmore College shows that Boards of Governors and Sponsors may need more freedom to discharge their responsibilities.

Con motivo del décimo aniversario del Año Internacional de la familia en el 2004, la ONU ha recordado su compromiso por fomentar programas y políticas que aseguren el bienestar de la familia. Se trata de repasar qué temas se están estudiando en el marco de esta celebración indagando sobre el valor que se presta a los procesos educativos. Por la referencia que en las Naciones Unidas se hace al trabajo de la Organización de EEUU, National Council on Familia Relations, se examina a qué temas sobre familia se les concede más importancia en las publicaciones periódicas de esta institución. On the occasion of the Tenth Anniversary of the International Year of the Family in the 2004, the UN has remembered its commitment to foment programs and policies that assure the wellbeing of the family. Here we review what subjects have been studied within the framework of this celebration investigating what importance has been given to the educational processes. This paper reviews recent literature addressing the state of technology in higher education as a backdrop for a faculty development program offered annually at Northwestern. First, we will present the state of technology related to teaching in three areas: (1) the varied institutional interest in technology, (2) the variance in faculty engagement with technology, and (3) factors that influence faculty acceptance of technology. Next, we will introduce Northwestern’s response to the need for faculty development related to technology, the 5-day Teaching and Learning with Technology workshop. Finally, we will present data gathered over two years that demonstrates how pedagogically-driven technology training can enhance teaching and encourage faculty to embrace technology in teaching to accomplish pedagogically-based learning objectives.

D. Goleman’s proposal referring to emotional intelligence has direct implications on educating emotions. The classical vision of emotion, summarised in Thomas of Aquinas’ doctrine, presents differences as well as similitudes with Goleman’s concept of emotional intelligence. They are two proposals which are contrary but not contradictory. They do not annul each other, but neither are they complementary: one or the other must be chosen so as to maintain the sense of unity in the continuity of the educational process. It would be more rigorous to talk about two different kinds of emotional education rather than two proposals, which coincide in some aspects, but which are unreconcilable in their whole. All intents of syncretism or eclecticism will inescapably result in confusion, in theoretical matters and in the practice of pedagogy

Learning and teaching techniques are changing in the new electronic environment. Students are asked to gather information from different sources, most of them in electronic formats. Libraries have to adapt their buildings and services to meet their users needs continuously. Amongst the means librarians have included to support learning are electronic based information and learning resources, a better provision of IT technologies, working environments for different types of learning, digital reference services, information literacy skills and the possibility of accessing all these facilities, resources and services at any time. The conclusion indicates that librarians should continuously improve electronic information and learning resources, as well as discovering new ways to approach students.

The laborious search for cultural and personal identity is accentuated in a globalised world. The tendency to look for general forms in the organisation of life together seems to be menacing singular identities, producing distrust towards all kinds of opening out to universalities. Coexistence, understood as radical anthropology, is lost in interpersonal relationships. The family seems to be the best educational ambit to learn, through experience, that the development of one’s own identity is not opposed to the universal opening which is required by globalisation, but is rather complementary to it

The central theme of this article is parent involvement. This article focuses on four areas: 1) the definition of the concept of parent involvement as a quality factor in education and as an exigency of social democracy. 2) Policies that enable parents to find time to participate in school activities. 3) The interactions between parents and the school system are examined on different levels: educational performance planning; materialization of the school teaching-learning processes; outcome-based-evaluation; and pedagogical and personal counselling. 4) Possible crisis in family involvement in education and their implications, according to parent ratings of school involvement
