Of what use is philosophy to education? What do philosophical purposes, skills and attitudes bring to educational practice? What might they accomplish? My concern in what follows is not with any particular set of philosophical doctrines, nor am I inquiring after the educational implications of this or that philosophical viewpoint. Rather, my questions pertain to philosophical activity itself. The questions are thus quite general and they are certainly not new. But they take on special urgency when viewed in the perspective of current trends that are likely increasingly to affect our future circumstances of life and our operative conceptions of education

In one italian public school, a conflict arose when a group of persons invoked the principle of freedom of conscience to justify their refusal to participate in religious services held in school. The juridical criteria used to resolve the difficult educational issue included freedom of religion, the principle of separation of church and state and the equality of all religions before the law. Consequently, the following measures were adopted: (1) the prohibition of all forms of public worship during class hours and (2) the list of extra-curricular activities excluded all religious exercises. Henceforth, all public manifestations of religious affiliation were unacceptable. Thus, the law effectively relegated religion into the private domain. Clearly, however, the repercussions of the legal solution go beyond the educational sphere. Note: the school cannot ignore the religious dimension as an integral part of education

At present, volunteerism, which is a new phenomenon in civil society, has been receiving widespread social and institutional support. Likewise, it has been the object of interdisciplinary study. Its contribution towards promoting the socialization and integration of persons within society is recognized, consequently, its incorporation in the school curriculum is being seriously considered as a means to ensure the integral formation of the students from an early age. The implementation of educational programs such as service learning, which combines the possibilities of volunteerism and formal education, is rich in its virtualities in the context of the school, as well as for the community

The aim of this paper is to analyze the infl uence of academic engagement on university students’ satisfaction with their faculty from teachers’ autonomy support. Scales of Autonomy Support, Academic Engagement and Satisfaction with the Faculty are administered to 870 Dominican university students (50.6% male and 49.4% female). Confi rmatory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modelling are carried out. The results refl ect the infl uence of teachers’ autonomy support on the satisfaction with the faculty mediated by academic engagement, as well as the direct effect of perception of teachers’ autonomy support on university students’ satisfaction with their educational center.

This article focuses on hospital pedagogues as accompanying figures for children with a terminal illness. Their role as educators is channelled within a multiprofessional team, on the support they can provide. This support is given not only to the pediatric patient but also to his or her family as well as the other members of the staff involved in the child’s care. The aim is to cope with the derived impact of an illness pronosticated as fatal. For this support to be effective it is necessary, in turn, for the professional of education to have a specific training in this field. Guidelines and reflections are offered on this topic
