Resumen
Immigration produced the need to adopt new educational aproaches. We can distingish Multicultural Education and Intercultural Education which respond to different theories about notions such as human nature; the individual, sociability and identity. Social Anthropology, Sociology and Psychology have provided knowledge about ways to improve education in a multicultural society. A good educational practice is based on the correct understanding of the role of culture in the development of people and therefore of their education

Resumen
Civic participation and civic awareness is essential to the maintenance of American democracy. Strong civic communities serve to promote prosperity, ensure the resolution of collective problems, and act as a check upon the power of the state. But in 2002, there is little doubt that, across a wide range of indicators, America’s civic culture is in decline. Voting rates have fallen rapidly over the past several decades, and so too has trust in government. Equally troubling is the disconcerting dearth of civic knowledge among American youths and the drop in participation, among all Americans, in numerous civic organizations, from church-affiliated groups to voluntary and fraternal organizations as well as women’s auxiliaries and unions. There are many causes for these trends. This paper examines how popular culture affects civic participation and civic awareness among a group of particularly active teenagers in Massachusetts. We found that popular culture has a generally negative influence on civic life but that its effects are not one-sided and that it can be mitigated by strong families and quality schools committed to an academic and civic education

Resumen
The university must strive to serve the truth and the common good of mankind, to base its endeavour on its awareness of the dignity of the human person, on the love for truth and freedom, and to develop teacher-student relationships in an atmosphere conducive to confidence and communication. In such an environment, students acquire those intellectual and behavioural habits which are of value to themselves as to others. When truth is held in high esteem, it is pursued with singlemindedness and critical accuracy. Students will become more aware of their responsability to attain knowledge as related to their chosen profession and so be of better service to society; but without excluding other fields of learning as sources of truth or closing themselves off from issues of trascendental significance. They should thus be better enabled to arrive at their own personal convictions and criteria within the framework of responsible freedom, always accompanied by a deep respect for others, whose opinions may differ from their own. And they will discover that serving others brings great happiness

Resumen
In society, there is a latent problem that is a perennial source of mistakes: the dominance of the economic paradigm in the public forum has a doping effect in people’s minds. As a response to the declaration of Berlin (2000), social and political efforts emerged trying to abandon a conception of society that is goberned by criteria that are derived from the laws of the economic markets. The concept of domain that is proposed here offers great advantages in facing the challenges that come with globalization. This notion indicates a way out of the lethargy. We think that moral and civic education, as proposed by Naval, can provide the needed antidote

Resumen
Vision provides a global, simultaneous and anticipating perspective of environment. Thus, an early severe visual deficit constitutes an important obstacle for cognitive and social development during childhood. An accurate educational response to the special needs of visually handicapped young individuals will only be fulfilled by a solid formation of specialist teachers and parents on knowledge and practical abilities concerning the nature of visual deficits, their cognitive and behavioral consecuences and the educational resources to be implemented in order to compensate the developmental and learning dificulties of these visually handicapped children. This article deals with the main topics concerning early blindness and its specific therapeutical educational needs

Resumen
Academic advising is not only helping students to learn but an educational means for the enhancement and full development of university students as human persons and as responsible professionals and citizens. The core nature of academic dialogue between university teachers and students is emphasized, describing the different types and degrees of personal and academic relationship, especially in the faceto- face situation that typically takes place in academic advising. It is also made clear that it is a task which does not allow the rigidity of a priori models, but one that, on the contrary, requires from both teachers and students a high degree of flexibility in its performance

Resumen
The content of the formation of future teachers would have to respond to the requirements of teaching practice within a social environment that is subject to constant and rapid changes. Specifically, the teachers need competencies in the following areas: communication in the classroom; identification of a personal teaching style that considers the impact on learning; use of adequate means to deal with practical problems in a class; and adaptation of curriculum content to the learning capacities of the students. In this regard, the teaching practicum cum mentoring plays a key role in the preparation of teachers. This aspect should be conceived not merely as an adjunct to the theoretical formation but as a cornerstone of the initial formation given to future teachers

Resumen
This paper, based mainly in the author's personal experience, supports the interaction between academic counselling and writing. The efficiency of academic counselling in the University years springs not only from the empathy between student and teacher, but especially from the mutual ability to communicate, that is, to listen one to the other, and to express in the best form each own toughts and feelings. The conclusion is that transforming the academic counselling in a school of personal writing may be in many occasions the best way of helping the students efficiently

Resumen
Pain has got different meanings. Physical pain, moral pain. The first kind is useful as witness of the corporal dysfunctions, and so it could be considered as a positive experience. But the second one (moral pain) is more difficult to understand: what is it for?, how does it make a sense?, why does it happen? In this paper we try to make a phenomenological description of pain’s different senses in ordinary language, as a way to find out the meaning of this dark experience in our life

Resumen
The article focuses on the impact of culture and counterculture on the day-to-day tasks of the education enterprise. The core and essential aspect of culture is the desire for excellence. Thus, the features of “culture” depend on a proper conception of the human person. The failure to recognize the “abandonment of being” as a legitimate reference for understanding man’s situation in the twenty-first century accounts for some of the false views that plague the “cultural” in our era
