Introduction: Predicting the onset of pain after endodontic treatment favors the professionals' clinical judgment regarding this procedure. Objective: To construct an index that combines the factors associated to pain after endodontic treatment in the study population. Methods: A study was carried out in two stages, in Santo Domingo City, Villa Clara Province. The first stage was a cross-sectional analytic study over a random sample of 94 endodontic treatments, collected in the period of March to December of 2015, for the construction of the index. The second stage was also a cross-sectional study over a sample of 62 treatments, carried out between January and May, 2016, with the purpose of assess the discriminatory ability of the obtained index. The information was collected through interrogation, clinical and radiographic examination; the presence of pain after therapy was recorded. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. For the construction of the index, we obtained the Cramer's V statistic values of each variable. Results: Among the factors associated with pain after endodontic treatment pain, the most were described such as preoperative pain or inflammation, pain during treatment, the number of appointments, and a reduced root canal, with Cramer's V values of 0.848, 0.605, 0.595 and 0.592, respectively. The sensitivity of the proposed index was 83.3 %. Conclusions: In the studied population, a multi-causal relationship was observed in the factors associated with the presence of pain after endodontic treatment. The preoperative pain or inflammation was the most influential factor. This factors were synthesized by means of an index. The proposed index presents an adequate sensitivity, which contributes to establish more accurate judgments regarding the subsequent onset of pain.

Introduction: tooth eruption is a complex process and due to this complexity flaws may appear in it. Objective: present a clinical case of a dentigerous cyst in an inverted mandibular third molar. Clinical case: a male 36-year-old patient reports having visited a dental clinic for discomfort in the right mandibular region. Orthopantomography was indicated which revealed that tooth 48 was retained; the patient was therefore referred. Clinical oral examination detected the absence of tooth 48 and an expanded vestibular table in the area. The orthopantomograph showed root resorption of tooth 47 in the area of the right molars, with 48 in an inverted position and a radiolucent image of clear-cut boundaries in relation to the crown of 48. Exeresis of 47 and 48 was performed under local anesthesia, and the lesion responsible for the mandibular radiolucent image was removed by curettage. Histopathological examination of the lesion was indicated, revealing the presence of a dentigerous cyst. Postoperative evolution was satisfactory. Conclusions: the infrequent presence of a dentigerous cyst as a complication of dental retention in an inverted mandibular third molar prompted the use of the benefits offered by digital imaging studies and the clinical method to develop a treatment plan leading to successful exeresis of the teeth involved and the associated lesion, without any perioperative complications.

Objective: evaluate the survival of adhesive restorations in cavities prepared with partial or total caries removal. Methods: a randomized double-blind clinical trial was conducted. The sample was composed of 107 teeth of 32 children aged 4-8 years who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria set for the trial. These children had deep cavities that covered one or two dental surfaces, which were treated by partial or total caries removal. Radiographic and clinical evaluations were performed every six months for two years. The children involved in the trial and the adults in charge of them also received motivation sessions, training, support and oral hygiene devices on a permanent basis. The data obtained were subjected to Kaplan-Meier survival statistical analysis, and the Log Rank test was used to determine the difference between the treatments. Survival table analysis was performed which included the two treatments at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months. Results: no significant difference was found between total and partial caries removal techniques (p= 0.61). Survival percentages were found to be 95 % at 6 months, 88 % at 12 months, 81 % at 18 months and 55 % at 24 months. Conclusions: no significant difference was found between the use of partial and total caries removal for cavity preparation for the outcome of restoration survival. Further studies about restoration survival should consider a 30 % dropout rate.

Introduction: Traumatic ulcers are characterized by short and painful episodes, but can become chronic if the causative agent is not removed. Alveolisis is an alteration that may occur during the primary tooth root resorption process, characterized by its exposure to the oral cavity, without resorption. Objective: To describe the case of a patient with an important edema and associated pain in the upper lip due to traumatic ulcer caused by exposure of the root apex of a primary incisor. Case presentation: Female patient aged 5 years old. After clinical examination, it was deduced that the lip swelling was related to the ulcer that was caused by the constant contact with the apex of the central incisor that has undergone alveolisis. The treatment consisted in the extraction of the tooth and the preservation of the labial mucosa ulcer. The extraction favored the eruption of the permanent incisor, allowed the complete healing of the traumatic lesion and the remission of the upper lip edema. Conclusions: Although simple, the case highlights the need for the professional to recognize the alveolisis and the possible associated complications as well as the appropriate way to manage them. A seemingly complex case was solved simply due to correct diagnosis and treatment.

Introduction: Dental research in Cuba has had important progress. That's why, a bibliometric analysis would indicate the tendency that it takes. Objective: To describe the Cuban dental scientific production indexed in the Web of Science in the period 2007-2016. Methods : An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was performed through bibliometric analysis. The following variables were studied: amount of articles, citations, self-citations, typologies, topics, categories, Cuban institutions, provinces, language, year of publication, countries, number of authors per article, kinds of authorship, annual index of collaboration, kinds of collaboration, H index, annual growth rate, journals, impact factor, quartile and publications of high quality. Results: 57 articles (56 originals and one abstract) were published, which have an H index of 12 and have received 457 citations (96 self-citations) with an average of 8.02 and 50.78 citations per article and per year, respectively. The growth rate and the index of collaboration had a yearly average value of 45.79 % and 5.39 %, respectively. High quality articles (n= 49; 85,96 %) predominated, related with implantology (n= 47; 82,46 %) published in the first quartile Journal Oral Clinical Implants Research (n= 44; 77,19 %), as well as the international collaboration with Italy, Brazil, and China. The most cited article had an annual average of citations of 6.50, while the most productive researcher was Daniele Botticelli, with 47 articles and 369 citations, with an H index of 11. Conclusions: Cuban dental scientific production, as well as its impact in terms of citation, shows a tendency of irregular growth characterized by international high collaboration.

Two years ago the article "Some bibliometric indicators referring to endodontics, present in Cuban medical journals" was published. In that article, the existence of scientific articles related to endodontics in Cuban medical journals was qualified as scarce; only until 2014 there were 25 articles of this type and national and foreign researchers were encouraged to send their related research to publishers in the country for dissemination. The technological advances of endodontic treatments have allowed to conserve teeth that were previously considered intractable.2 Hence the importance of updating and constant renewal of knowledge in this regard to improve our practice and the quality of life of our patients. After the publication of the aforementioned article, the Cuban Journal of Stomatology has published on average one article per number related to endodontics, which represents just under half of the total existing until 2014 in all the journals of the country. We believe that this figure is not enough and that researchers have to put effort in this section that interests us all professional guild. We encourage you once again to investigate and investigate the main advances and problems that make dentistry a responsible practice on a day-to-day basis.
