Diabetes Mellitus is a group of complex diseases, characterized by the presence of hyperglycemia. Diabetes can be classified into several categories, type 1 DM, type 2 DM, Gestational Diabetes and other specific types of diabetes: within this category the monogenic diabetes is one of them and its pathophysiological affectation is due to the mutation of a single gene. Maternally inherited diabetes and deafness (MIDD) is a rare type of diabetes mellitus, caused by a mutation in mitochondrial DNA. It affects almost 1% of the population with diabetes but due to its clinical characteristics, it is commonly misdiagnosed by physicians as type 1 or type 2 DM  the m.3243A> G mutation that corresponds to a substitution of an adenine molecule with a guanine molecule at position 3243 of the mitochondrial DNA. A family history of diabetes, deafness and macular dystrophy is highly suggestive of the disease and the corresponding diagnostic tests must be performed. We present the case of a female patient diagnosed as type 1 DM at 23 years of age, with a history of bilateral sensorineural deafness, short stature, low BMI, receiving insulin therapy, admitted at the identification of macular dystrophy, detectable C Peptide levels, low IGF-1 and low growth hormone levels, negative Anti-GAD and Anti-Insulin antibodies, raised the possibility of Mitochondrial Diabetes and this diagnosis was further confirmed patient diagnosed and confirmed genetically with MIDD in Costa Rica.

Cardiotoxicity associated with the use of chemotherapy has been largely corroborated through multiple clinical trials. In Costa Rica, the development of Cardio-oncologic Units has begun recently in various medical centers with the purpose of achieving an early detection of the deleterious cardiovascular effect associated with different chemotherapeutics. This review consists of a summary of the clinical manifestations related to the use of anthracyclines available in the Costa Rican public health system.

The structure and function of the mammary gland has a complex mechanism, which responds to physical and hormonal stimuli to ensure proper and timely feeding of the newborn. Objective: To identify anatomopathological elements of the process of lactogenesis with forensic transcendence. Methodology: Review on the topic in the literature in English, Spanish and Portuguese, no more than 10 years of publication. The databases used were Medline, LILACS and SciELO, did not include dissertations. Conclusion: Although there are benign and malignant pathologies that can affect the normal process of lactogenesis, from the anatomical and physiological point of view there are also natural mechanisms such as congenital alterations and external mechanisms: physical, chemical and therapeutic, that can alter or injure this process, either iatrogenic effects or effects produced intentionally or non-intentionally, which could be permanent and generate some kind of disability. Due to the forensic repercussions, its correct diagnosis, differential diagnoses and etiological factors are elements that the expert should consider in cases of pathology and breast trauma.

Neurofibromatosis, today understood as a concept including two different entities (type 1 and type 2), is a genetic disease part of the neurocutaneous syndromes, initially described in 1849 that nowadays remains widely studied due to its complex physiopathology. is mechanism has been partially attributed due to mutations in tumoral suppressor genes, allowing uncontrolled cellular proliferation, producing different benign and cancerous neoplasia that characterized the disease. e clinical picture is complemented by affection of other body systems. Among the tumors that compose this entity are neurofibromas, plexiform neurofibromas, nerve sheath malign tumors, gliomas, schwannomas, meningiomas and ependimomas. e approach to these tumors, consisting principally in image study follow ups, surgery and chemotherapy, is currently not unified by international guidelines by the respective worldwide entities.

Leprosy is chronic infectious, slowly developing progressive disease that damages the skin and nervous system caused by Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis, which mainly affects the skin and peripheral nervous system. We describe some epidemiological characteristics of leprosy in Costa Rica during 2012-2017. This study showed a prevalence rate less than one per ten thousand inhabitants nationwide. Nevertheless, new cases continue to be reported throughout the country and in some regions in greater proportion than others, indicating that transmission of the disease persists as a potential risk especially in families.

Obesity is currently a public health problem in different nations around the world. According to the National Poll of the Nutritional Situation (ENSIN) of 2015, the adult population with overweight went from the 51,2% in 2010 to 56,4% in 2015. Although the observed levels are far away from the prevalent levels in México (64,4%) and the United States (67,3%), the trend is worrying. One of the effects of this disease is the alteration of the physical condition, in terms of exercise. Method: Correlational study with the aim of estimating the correlation between %G (bio-impedance pole) and physical capacities of strength (abdominal strength), flexibility (sit and reach) and endurance (Leger test). Results: A positive correlation between BMI and %G value for men and women was observed. There was a significant negative correlation between %G and aerobic capacity in men, while a positive one was found between the %G and the abdominal strength in women.  No correlation was found between the flexibility physical capacity and the %G, on neither men or women. Conclusion: The results proved the findings obtained in various studies. It was proven that in the study population the increase of fat percentage affected the aerobic physical capacity and the abdominal strength of women, and it does not correlate with the flexibility in both genders.

Siendo la Fisioterapia una profesión de formación universitaria, debe generar en sí misma una nquietud investigativa, de su objeto de estudio: "el movimiento corporal humano". Una de las maneras de lograrlo es a partir de la reflexion de los procesos de medición y evaluación utilizados por los fisioterapeutas para que la evaluacionfisioterapéutica sea una categoría, que acerque esta disciplina a la excelencia . Este artículo pretende, en primer lugar, reflexionar sobre la importancia de la medición en fisioterapia como disciplina científica con sus implicaciones y compromisos; en segundo lugar profundizar sobre los principios de la medición y evaluación científica, y en tercer lugar; reconocer la importancia de investigar en los procesos de medición y evaluación básicos par el diagnóstico, pronóstico e intervención desde fisioterapia, con el fin de elaborar nuevos y mejores procesos de examinacion dentro de la práctica cotidiana.

El articulo define la Psicología de la Salud y anota sus campos de interés, entre los cualesestá la rehabilitación. Explica qué puede ofrecer, tanto al paciente como al equipointerdisciplinario en el proceso de rehabilitación y además anota ejemplos de los tipos deintervención psicológica con pacientes que presentan diferentes problemas de salud.

En este artículo, se hace una revisión sobre los cambios que sufre la voz en el decurso dela vida, llevando a cabo un recorrido, desde la etapa infantil, pasando por la pubertad yadolescencia, la etapa presenil, para finalizar en la etapa senil. Por último, se concluye, enla importancia de la preservación de la salud vocal, como una manera de brindar calidadde vida a los individuos, siendo esta última, una meta de la rehabilitación.

El presente articulo intenta una aproximación al tema, "proyecto de vida" en personas con discapacidad mental, el cual se construye desde la experiencia directa con este tipo de población y mediante un programa de 5 meses ; esta vivencia se convierte en la tercera fase de un proceso desarrollado por la Facultad de Terapia Ocupacional de la Institución Universitaria Fundación Escuela Colombiana de Rehabilitación, dentro delos programas de participación comunitaria del Hospital de Usaquén E.SE ( Empresa Social del Estado), entre enero de 2002 y junio de 2003, proyecto encaminado a trabajar la competencia ocupacional en estas personas. involucra también acciones contextualizadas en lo que establece el Plan Distrital de Discapacidad 20012005 y el documento "Lineamientos de Atención en Salud para las Personas con Discapacidad en Bogotá", ambos de la Secretaria Distrital de Salud de Bogotá. Se presentan algunas explicaciones sobre concepto de vida, proyecto de vida y su relación con Terapia Ocupacional, además,la autora ofrece desde su experiencia, una descripción cualitativa fundamentada en el modelo de la Ocupación Humana y del Desempeño Ocupacional Realizan/e, sobre cómo se presenta la capacidad para diseñar el proyecto de vida en personas con enfermedad mental, y a partir de esto, se plantea desde el Enfoque de la Logoterapia, una propuesta para intervenir en este campo. Se aclara al lector; que dentro del discurso se entremezclan escritos de algunos usuarios sobre cada una de las temáticas trabajadas, tratando así de humanizar el presente.
