Novo, María
Universidad de los Lagos
The author reviews the role that patriarchal societies have granted women, to focus then in modernity, a time whose dominant values are defined from the male and Western view of the world, presented as universal values. He delves then into the invisibility of women and nature in the modern paradigm and the predominance of economicism, and notes that the process of emancipation of women anticipates the emergence of a new paradigm with feminine values as a proposal for a shared reconstruction of society.

This article makes a counterpoint between these two concepts, questioning whether there is an irreducible antinomy between them, and aims to explore a conjunction between the exuberance of utopia and the sobriety of democracy. In its development, the author reviews the installed idea that utopia can only be totalitarian, and seeks to restore to utopia its capacity of movement. Delving into the concepts of democracy and utopia proposes a new connection between the two, placing democracy and utopia under the sign of the human.

Molina Bustos, Carlos
Universidad de los Lagos
The origin of the institutionalism of health in Chile and the intense debates which took place within the medical association, constitute the main topic of the text by Carlos Molina. The author offers a critical analysis of contradictions of a profession which began asking itself about the question of the social role of medicine in a time of profound social changes and economic crisis. Physicians, as profesionals and intelectual elites, could not keep themselves away from political struggles, and had to offer answers in front of social crisis. The origin of the vision of the functional aspects of technical-health, which ended with the creation of the SNS (1952) and lasted until 1973, is the result of this intense period of agitation within the different professional associations.

Hinkelammert, Franz
Universidad de los Lagos
The author argues that we are in front of a conflict over globalization strategy, being the ongoing struggle to reformulate the idea of constitutional state one of its edges. This has ment a growing crush of human rights exercised by constitutional state and democracy. This is a conflict with a deep background that under no circumstances will find solution by a simple change of government in the United States. The conflict is a long term one and will continue to produce many victims. He postulates that we are developing a new totalitarianism in whose construction globalization strategy is at the root of the problem.

Salazar P., Robinson
Universidad de los Lagos
Faced with a Latin America mobilized, conflicted and crossed by outbreaks of interactoral, civic-contestatary and political violence, and with abuses of governments that result in citizen complaints and new political practices of the people with no rights, a risk scenario is created for this weak democracy. The author thus  analyzes democracy not only in regards electoral processes but covering other edges of this phenomenon, such as participation, demonstrations, new actors and behaviors of crowds, seeking to account for the risks of democracy.
