Introduction. The present study provides description of two typologically diverse languages in origin (Slavic vs. Latin), script (Cyrillic vs. Roman), and internal structure. One of the similarities, between the two studied orthographies is that spelling-sound transparency is quite consistent in both languages. The goal of the present study was to offer a comparison of learning to read in these languages. Specifically, the study compared the importance of several predictors in the development of reading among children learning two consistent orthographies (Bulgarian and Spanish).Method. A total of 157 children, native speakers of Bulgarian (n=80) and Spanish (n=77), were recruited from three public schools (one in Sofia and two in Madrid) located in middleclass areas. Correlational and regression analyses revealed that Bulgarian and Spanish data were fitted by the same predictors of passage reading efficiency and reading speed.Results. The analyses showed that RAN-Letters played an important role in predicting reading fluency and passage reading efficiency among children in both languages. In addition, Vocabulary appeared to be a core component skill of reading comprehension, which was equally important for learners of both orthographies. Results showed that when equivalent reading predictors are assessed, the core components of fluency and higher level literacy skills (reading comprehension) appear to be very similar in both consistent orthographies.Discussion and Conclusion. Theoretical and educational implications that highlight the importance of RAN and Vocabulary assessement and intervention in the first primary school years are discussed.

Introduction. The aim of this study was to explore the specific vocational identity of secondary school students whose first choice of degree program is Psychology. In particular, this study analyzes when their interest in Psychology began, the curriculum track taken in high school and their profile of vocational interests and values.Method. The sample was made up of 4715 subjects in their final year of secondary education at public or private schools in the Greater Madrid region (Spain); 43.9% were male, and the mean age was 17.38 years (SD= .64). Subjects completed the Project Orion battery of guidance questionnaires. A subsample of 509 students wished to study Psychology; their mean age was 17.38 years (SD= .69), and 76.2% were female.Results. The results showed significant differences in the profile of vocational interests and values of students who wished to study Psychology, in comparison to the others. Specifically, students opting for Psychology showed greater interest in the area of Healthcare, followed by interests in the vocational area of Teaching and Guidance. Furthermore, the vocational values that characterize students who wish to study Psychology were: Helping people, Doing something useful and important and Pursuing higher values. The guidance they had received from teachers and school counselors about which curriculum track to follow in upper secondary school was appropriate.Discussion and conclusions. The stability of this interest over time, after its appearance at some time during adolescence, shows the field of Psychology to be something eminently vocational. The present study demonstrates the importance of guidance activities during the first year of post-compulsory secondary education (11th grade). It also contributes to improved guidance processes in compulsory and post-compulsory secondary education, and toward a better understanding of the identity of this profession in current society.

Introduction. When faced with challenges or complications, we typically turn to coping. Coping is a multifaceted and multidimensional construct, with many coping mechanisms developed in the form of questionnaires to measure a number of coping styles. Consequently, when we are not able to resolve a problem, we normally seek help from another person. The goal of this current study is to investigate students’ coping strategies and help-seeking behaviors while pursuing their studies at a university in Brunei.Method. A questionnaire consisting of questions related to demographic, coping and helpseeking behaviors were disseminated to 395 university students. The final sample analyzed consisted of 352 students (270 females and 82 males). The analyses of the quantitative data involved procedures such as descriptive statistics, inferential statistics and nonparametric statistics.Results. A two-Way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis identified task-oriented coping and gender as the main effects are significantly related to academic achievement. Both variables had high effect sizes and statistical power. Hierarchical stepwise multiple regression analysis confirmed task-focused coping and female gender as the variables most significantly related to academic success. Binary logistic regression analysis further showed that task-andemotion based coping was significantly related to achieving at or above the 75th percentile. Task-oriented students had higher odds for performing above the third quartile (OR = 1.043, 95% CI for OR = 1.019 - 1.069). Self-dependent students were 1.9 times more likely to achieve higher than other peers (OR = 1.930, 95% CI = 0.791 - 4.708). Students who sought help from lecturers were more likely to perform better than others (OR = 1.163, 95% CI = 0.530 - 2.552). Similarly, students who consulted peers had high likelihood for good achievement (OR = 1.049, 95% CI = 0.484 - 2.272).Discussion and Conclusion. The task-oriented coping style was the best achievement predictor for all students with high support needs. The help-seeking resources consulted most by distressed students were self, lecturers, and peers. Students who utilized these three sources of help had high likelihood to obtain good academic results. Moreover, male students need more assistance than the females.
