Desde que se inició el capitalismo, allá por el siglo XVI, se sabe que hay dos grandes maneras o recursos para competir. En fecha reciente se ha visto con mayor claridad que se trata de dos tipos de recursos: las ventajas tecnológicas y las ventajas organizativas (Wallerstein, 1991). Las ventajas tecnológicas no pueden predominar en la mayoría de las empresas de países sin —o casi sin— infraestructura de investigación tecnológica aplicada, como México. En cambio, las ventajas organizativas están plenamente a nuestro alcance...

Aprovecho esta editorial para comentar la agradable lectura del libro Pmteur's Quadrant, de Donald E. Stokes, que toca con nuevas intenciones el tema de la relación entre la ciencia básica y la innovación tecnológica. El autor se refiere, para empezar, al libro de Vannevar Bush, S h c e , the Endless Frontier, que le solicitó Franklin D. Roosevelt en 1944 para contribuir a sentar el papel de la ciencia en tiempos de paz.

The very nature of chemistry presents us with a tension. A tension between the exhilaration of diversity of substances and forms on the one hand and the safety of fundamental unity on the other. Even just the recent history of chemistry has been al1 about this tension, from the debates about Prout's hypothesis as to whether there is a primary matter in the 19th century to the more recent speculations as to whether computers will enable us to virtually dispense with experimental chemistry.

Chemistry is by far the most productive science concerning the number of publications. A closer look at chemical papers reveals that most papers deal with new substances. The rapid growth of chemical knowledge seriously chailenges al1 institutions and individuals concerned with chemistry. Chemistry documentation following the pnnciple of completeness is required to schematize chemical information, which in turn induces a schematization of chemical research.

Pasto y agua podría ser una respuesta. Si comparamos lo que comen las vacas con lo que comen los seres humanos, podemos fácilmente ver que, para sobrevivir, las vacas necesitan menor variedad de alimentos que los seres humanos. ¿A qué se debe esto? ¿Por qué a las vacas les es suficiente el pasto y nosotros tenemos que comer, además de vegetales, carne de animales como las vacas? ¿Dónde están las diferencias, en las necesidades o en el proceso de digestión? ¿Acaso las vacas no requieren proteínas animales como los seres humanos, o será que a partir del pasto las vacas son capaces de sintetizar todo lo que necesitan? 

Una fórmula de Lewis bien escrita facilita la comprensión de la geometría molecular, resonancia, comportamiento ácido-base y reactividad de una especie molecular. En los cursos básicos de Química una estructura de Lewis ayuda enormemente a la comprensión de los conceptos de valencia y número de oxidación (Garritz, 1997).

Nitrogen furation has been a subject of great interest to chemists for the best part of a century. As a chemical problem it is possibly unique because the research has really been led by biologists for most of this time. Currently it is being studied by a wide range of scientists of many different stripes, and the interplay between them lends fascination to the topic. Even more, nitrogen futation has been used by humans for at least two thousand years even though the primitive agriculturalists could not have been aware of what was going on. 

The first question the reader might ask Why only organic chemistry? and why only the second half of the 20th century? One answer is to say that 1 am an organic chemist and that, since my independent career started in 1948, 1 arn a professional witness only to what happened in the second half of this century. But there are more cogent answers to the two questions. Were 1 to try to cover al1 of chemistry of the entire century with its many advances, for example in chemical instrumentation, this article would become entirely unwieldy. 

A historical perspective on the origins of Microscale Chemistry in the USA and of the motivation behind it is presented here by one of the fathers of Microscale Chemistry and his colleagues. The success achieved can be understood in the light of the establishment of many programs and centers around the world.
