Resumen
The author maps the situation in Latin America as inserted in a double frame of modernization and democratization, postulating that Latin American countries have to respond simultaneously to both "logics". He argues that to the extent that market society does not offer a binding normativity, it is for democracy to generate this normativity, but warns that it can not be contrary to the "imperatives" of current economic rationality. Then elaborates on the new role of the State, and on the demand to strengthen civil society, which would represent an essential criterion for the "quality of democracy."

The objective of this paper is to investigate the involvement that women in Republican Rome could have had in matters alleged to be enjoyed exclusively by men, concerns such as politics and finances, with the ulterior aim of revealing actual social realities, formerly ignored and disregarded. Previous studies focused largely on women’s domesticity, fertility, and the preservation of a stainless behavior as a result of the exempla outlined by ancient authors such as Livy, Vergil, Plutarch, and Appian, male writers who lived on the edge of time between the precepts of the Republic and the brand-new outset of the Principate. By using an innovative approach based on Judith Butler’s performativity, we will be able to explore Roman women’s identities and their closeness to an actual but traditionally obscured power.

Resumen
This study was aimed at validating the Political Action Tendencies Scale in Chilean students who attend traditional universities in the region of Valparaiso, Chile. Through a quota sampling process, 600 students of both sexes were enrolled. Theirmean age was of 20.09 years (SD = 3.02). Participants filled in a 12-item questionnaire measuring willingness to participate in several forms of political action. Two-factor and 3-factor models were tested through confirmatory factor analyses. The 3-factor model—which included non normative political action, organized political action and normative political action—displayed the best fit. Confirmatory factor analyses also supported the metric invariance of the scale by sex, religion, and political orientation, which made it possible to compare—with Student's t-test—the means of these groups in the 3 dimensions of the scale and demonstrated its discriminant validity. These findings provide evidence of the validity of the Political Action Tendencies Scale. Steps to improve this instrument include incorporating additional dimensions of political action and extending its application to other social actors.

Resumen
Few instruments have been suitably translated and validated for measuring motivational aspects linked to reading in the Spanish-speaking world. The present study was aimed at psychometrically validating the Gambrell, Palmer, Codling, and Mazzoni's Motivation to Read Survey (MTS; 1996), which comprises 2 subscales: reader's self-concept and value of reading. A convenience sampling process was used to recruit 698 Chilean 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders attending 4 subsidized and private schools in the Metropolitan Region of Chile; 53% of them were boys and 47% were girls. The scale was translated using the back translation method. Internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha), expert rater, and construct validity analyses were performed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Results show that the Spanish version of the MTS is a reliable and valid instrument that can be used for research and instructional purposes, allowing researchers and teachers to delve deeper into reading motivation in Spanishspeaking children.

Resumen
The aim of this article is to present the author's experience regarding the contributions of neurosciences and cognitive psychology to research on the learning of written language from the perspective of the model of scientific paradigms, advanced by the philosopher Thomas Kuhn for the study of the history of science. The article describes the research and the progress made over the last 60 years in the field of cognitive psychology and educational neuroscience with respect to the learning of written language. The knowledge derived from educational neuroscience, based on neuroimaging, reveals a close connection between cognitive processes in the brain and the educational psychology of school learning.

Depression is a heterogeneous disorder that can manifest itself in multiple ways (self-critical or dependent style) and whose structural functioning differs among patients. This study aimed to assess the relationship between structural functioning and depressive styles, along with the effect of the latter on changes in outcomes during therapy. Based on a purposive sample, 145 patients were evaluated at 2 outpatient psychotherapeutic care centers in Santiago, Chile. Several elements were measured: self-critical and dependent aspects (DEQ), structural functioning (OPD-SQ) at the start of the therapy, and outcomes (OQ-45.2) at the beginning of the process and during the 3rd and 6th sessions. Correlational, path, and latent growth analyses revealed that higher dependency and self-criticism levels are related to less integration of overall structural functioning. Higher dependency levels correlate with lower integration in the perception of self and in the management of object relations. Also, analyses showed that more self-criticism is linked to less integration of internal bonds. High dependency or self-criticism levels are associated with lower initial overall well-being; however, only high dependency correlates with a positive change in outcomes.
