Resumen
Bancassurance is understood as the relationship between a bank and an insurance company that decide to support each other by the fact that both carried out financial activities. It is a very important phenomenon in the Spanish financial history, where banks have dominated the scene with the formation of large groups with subsidiaries in the industry and the financial services. The bank-industry relationship has earned much attention, but the bancassurance relationship has never been studied in depth. This work analyzes, with archival sources, the Hispano-Estrella case, i.e., the relationship established between the Banco Hispano Americano, which led its ranking for many years, and La Estrella, an insurance company that at times was second in its ranking. This study of a relevant and protracted (more than 90 years) case and helps to understand how the bancassurance limited the development of the Spanish insurance, because the strategy of the bank (the strong partner) always tended to be imposed on that of the insurance company (the weak partner).

Resumen
This article is focused on the history of Riotinto mines since its acquisition by Spanish capital in 1954 until its closure in 2003. Half a century in which the mine met various national and foreign owners who faced technical, financial and labor problems in order to market pyrites, copper, gold and silver in a process of accelerated extraction, resource depletion and falling prices, in the framework of a Spanish and global economy increasingly globalised. This article referred to the problems above to leave hanging the question about the fate of the mining districts who have not had the opportunity to diversify their economies, leaving a picture of strong environmental impact and productive and human desertification.

Resumen
This paper presents an overview of the findings in current research on innovativeness and reception of foreign technology in a peripheral country such as Spain. To that effect, patents held in place for more than ten years had been use as an indicator. These patents —whether by its value or quality— provide a more accurate view on innovation. A detailed analysis of patent records still a relevant source not only to deep delve into the role of the patent system but also to the characteristics and peculiarities of the technical progress of innovation in outlying countries. Moreover, the article seeks to explore the forerunners of this process as well as the dynamics involved in the patent renewal. As strategies and capabilities of both independent inventors and companies follow a different path, they had been consider separately.

Resumen
The present article studies the Sino-Spanish trade between 1900 and 1930, through the annual reports of the Chinese Maritime Customs. This institution was one of the mainstays of the treaty port system, and its archives contain information about the Sino-Spanish trade and the Spanish population that lived in China, as well as their economic activities. Its function was to guarantee the conditions of free trade that China had signed with the foreign powers. However, despite the Spanish presence and the participation of this community in the custom service, the Sino-Spanish trade remained weak and with a negative balance for Spain. This article aims to explain the characteristics of the Spanish community in China and the reasons of the weakness of the Sino-Spanish trade.

Resumen
This article focuses on the permanent presence of the Civil Guard, in barracks (casas cuartel) in industrial areas, assessing the role it played in the development of relations between employers and workers, primarily in the first third of the 20th century. The introduction of this public law enforcement agency in industrial areas, facilitated by the corporate sector itself to respond to the workers’ demands, is still not common knowledge. For the above purposes, the different barracks were analysed in three main industrial areas: municipalities, industrial settlements or colonies, and agricultural sites. Our research confirms the confrontational role of this law enforcement agency in defending the common interests of the employers and the State, before the workers and their demands, which led the buildings of residential barracks to become the target of the most violent attacks.

Resumen
Considering the importance of transport between Spain and France, in this article we analyze several projects of railway connection in the middle of the 19th century. Specifialy the Pyrenean railways, the subject of several studies, much politicial debate and comment in the journals but with few results. In the Pyrenees regions there was the demand to build more railroads, as they only had Irún and Portbou, so there were many kilometers without trains joing both countries. However, such aspirations suffered the opposition of a large part of the Spanish army and the lack of real interest by the central government, the railway companies and the French government. In addition, it should be added, the high costs and possible losses of a new railway line. This explains the delay in an international conference between both countries to treat this important problem.
