Valpo. City of Letters is a project that aims to study and value the historical letters of the heritage areas of Valparaíso, Chile. This aspect constitutes a novel approach to the patrimony of the city. Knowing and recovering its historical letters is also rescuing an important part of the social, political and economic actions of its inhabitants, their representations and visual identity. This article will focus mainly on the methodology proposed for the fieldwork that will serve as the basis for the analysis of lettering uses of a city, but will also propose some actions tending to integrate the letter to the cultural landscape.

This research introduces how to analyse verbal data to identify appraisals themes that trigger specific emotions in the person-object interaction. Appraisal themes are general descriptions that synthesize and reflect similar responses that a group of people experience in particular emotions. Two emotions: confidence and frustration, are used as case studies to identify their appraisal themes. The article presents the general process to obtain the data and details how to undertake the analysis. Identifying appraisal themes helps designers understand the emotional experience that people have with objects. It can also be the starting point to design for eliciting specific emotions.

The purpose of this article is to reflect on the different approaches involved in an environmentally conscious design. It is known that the variability of the data referred to the sustainability of a material and the reliability of the same constitutes an obstacle for the decision making. That is why sustainable design, often, resorts to formal aspects that highlight the recycling or reuse of materials with a strongly artisan look.

This study addresses a current issue in the research agenda in the field of design studies: the search of cross-methodological models that can explain different kinds of design activities, which are distant from the barriers of the classic models. Cognitive and operative processes are analyzed and translated into a network of actors and actants in the different modalities of the design praxis, using as study cases the graphic design, the clothes and textile design. This issue is defined by their relationship systems, the objects they produce, the strategies they use and the dominant ideas of each activity. The general strategy of the research combines the construction of a critical conceptual framework with a descriptive empirical design using a field observation technique known as Replication Protocol Analysis. The results show some preliminary aspect of a methodological model common to different projective expressions, and the complex nature of their constitutional processes. A methodological conceptualization is provided; centered on the idea of “agency” and “projecting network” as a set of actors, actants and discourses present in the processes involved in the different design expressions analyzed.

The present proposal is an investigation about the history of the infographics in Chile linked to the development of the educational field, the industry and the press in the country. The corpus consists of images present in printed graphic media such as books, magazines, brochures and newspapers published during the second half of the 19th century. Through a qualitative methodology, the content examination was carried out in documentary sources belonging to libraries and personal archives, as well as interviews and material acquired in antique shops and street markets. According to the research, info-graphic representations have been shown moderately since the beginning of the publishing industry and have progressively increased their national presence based on political, technological and cultural factors. Given that the term infographic did not exist during the period, the relationship between the images researched is defined not by a disciplinary affiliation but by its visualization strategies similarities. Although these first initiatives were carried out in isolation, they constituted a first reference panorama for explanatory illustrations production in the country, which had not been systematically documented.

When people interact with products, emotional relationships arise. Designers must be aware of those relationships to create meaningful products. In the last two decades, research around the emotions occurring between products and users revealed how materials play a crucial role in the development of emotional relationships. This article presents the theoretical background around the investigations of emotions in the design field, focusing on the influence materials have between the products and the user’s emotional relationships. Besides, we will present two classes of emerging materials known as DIY-Materials and ICS-Materials and the relevance they have in the design field, as they are enablers of emotions, not only to the user but also to the designers who create them. Different from the traditional materials produced by science and engineering, those emerging materials maintain a healthy emotional relationship with the designers during the development phase. These ties exalt the expressive-sensorial qualities of the materials over the physical properties and make them essential components of the whole project.

The SINCO Laboratory of the University of Lapland has developed a methodology based on the role playing, co-creation and technology to prototype a service. This process allows creating a space of trust in which emotions, experiences and creativity come together in the same place, stimulating collaborative design. Therefore, the role of the designer is essential to articulate and guide the process, as a key actor to transform expectations and opinions into concrete service proposals for their improvement or creation. The process of service prototyping involves emotions because it requires reviving and recreating previous experiences to build new ones.

This writing refers to the character that created the style that bears his name, approaches the historical context in which his furniture and decoration designs emerge, describes what Boulle marquetry is, and points out the difficulties of attribution or certification of authenticity at present, given that these pieces of furniture have been “imitated” in the same or similar way for more than three centuries. Finally, it shows in a certain detail a bas d’armoire of the late nineteenth century inspired by the Boulle school and reflects on some reasons why the imitations of furniture in Boulle mode are still made today, the most democratized contribution to the current time of André-Charles Boulle.
