This paper analyses the patterns of convergence across the European Union countries in terms of both economic growth and technological conditions during the period 1995-2013. We apply the methodology of Phillips-Sul (2007) to study convergence in real income per capita and countries’ technological capabilities. We consider separately eight technological indicators as proxies for a country's innovative ability and absorptive capacity. The results support the club convergence hypothesis for income and some technology-related indicators, and offer an approximation to the role that technological capabilities could play in the income convergence process.

Summary Before the Ukrainian conflict the EU-Russian relationships had been developing in the format of Strategic Partnership, and Russia had been considered as one of the ‘special ten’ to whom a special status of ‘strategic partner’ was awarded. The ‘special ten’ are unequal in size, political regimens, resource endowments, economic development, and power status. The main problem of this new concept of European Union Foreign Policy is that there is neither an official definition of strategic partnership nor any common criteria for being chosen as a strategic partner. It is worth mentioning that Russia at the same time has not only developed the integration with the European Union but has also promoted the integration in the post-Soviet area and as a result the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) has been created. Thus, speaking about the UE-Russian relations we should take into account the new Actor on the international arena, the EEU. The present paper aims at elaborating Strategic Partner’s Attractiveness Index for the EU, using the categorical principal components analysis (CATPCA). This analysis allows us to rank its declared strategic partners and to find out which position Russia and other members of the EEU hold in a rank.

In this paper we will empirically contrast the effects of globalization on growth and employment, since a large number of works, from the late 1980s to the present, have emphasized that globalization has influenced such rates, increasing growth for the Orthodox, or decreasing it and increasing the rate of unemployment for the post-Keynesians. We have contrasted these hypotheses indirectly, through the application of unit root tests with changes in the mean. The results confirm that the growth and unemployment rates have undergone changes in their long-term values, but there have been other types of disturbances, and not globalization, the causes.

By using three indicators of the standard of living (income per capita, the Human Development Index and the Physical Quality of Life Index), this article provides new information regarding the evolution of the differences in well-being between the Spanish provinces throughout the 20th century. The results reveal that the disparities were enormous at the beginning of the century, after which a highly significant process of convergence took place, which was comparatively lower in terms of income per person than it was with respect to the HDI or the PQLI. Another noteworthy finding is that, irrespective of the indicator used, the well-being of each province is significantly influenced by that of its neighbours throughout the whole of the period analysed.

Until 50 years, the carob, was mainly used as food for livestock. From today’s perspective, its contribution to the sustainment of small and medium-sized farms in the days before mass mechanization is beyond any doubt. However, after a long process of decline beginning in the 1950’s, the fruit and the seed of the carob tree regained importance as a raw material for the production of quality food additives, such as locust bean gum or E-410. The Balearic Islands, which historically have been one of the main carob producers in the world, have established themselves in the 1930’s as the leading region in the development of industrial techniques for the processing of carobs. Moreover, Majorcan companies pioneered the concentration of agricultural production. This increased research and favoured innovations, as well as it helped the cartelization of this sector. Nowadays, carob still remains highly relevant in Majorca and on international markets.

The Compañía Iberoamericana de Publicaciones (CIAP) was a Spanish book publishing house of unprecedented proportions. It appeared on the scene during the first third of the twentieth century at a time when winds of modernization were blowing through the book industry, which was acquiring characteristics that, for the first time, would lead to talk about «capitalism in publishing». The CIAP revolutionized the Spanish book publishing market with a series of initiatives that were ahead of its time, for example, long-term exclusivity contracts with authors, which would serve to dignify the profession of writers in Spain. Other examples include the intensive use of advertising and the introduction of literary awards. Nevertheless, this business experiment was to end in a spectacular bankruptcy that swept away the Bauer banking house and showed up the real potential of the sector.

Economic regulation of Mendoza wine market, since the beginning of the twentieth century, was an important issue for local political leaders and entrepreneurs. The academic literature, particularly that associated with market regulators, is extremely poor. The authors have shown some consensus on the need for state intervention to protect small and medium-sized vintners and winemakers from the major industrial firms and commercial intermediaries. At the same time, they have warned about the failures of regulatory policies, such as distortions in costs and prices of wine to consumers, the promotion of an inefficient industry and «the regulatory capture», but they have not valued the magnitude of the intervention and its impact on wine industry. The article analyzes the wine market regulators, public and private, which functioned between 1914 and 1943, focusing on transactions in the grape and wine markets.
