In Mexico, during the six-year period 2012-2018, the main social policy was implemented through the National Crusade against Hunger (CNcH), where social participation was considered the central way to promote community development. It was intended that this, through community committees, would strengthen and ensure the active and constant involvement of citizens; however, this did not necessarily happen. The main objective of this study is therefore to determine what encourages or limits people's participation in the social policy; studying the community committees set up to implement the CNcH, and taking as a case study its application in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico.

The goal of this article is to analyze the patterns of inequality that affect different birth cohorts in Mexico from the perspective of chances for social mobility. Based on a longitudinal cohort design, the changes and continuities in the intensity of the association between social class origins and destinations are analyzed, both without isolating (controlling) the structural effects of changes in the occupational structure (absolute mobility) and isolating them, in order to know the net chances for intergenerational social mobility (social fluidity). The analysis applies the comparative methodology of specific rates and loglinear models, based on the EGP class scheme. The results show that, despite given the improvements in income distribution inequality during the “hard-won decade”, the country was characterized by a social closure that reduced the net opportunities for social promotion and downward mobility, but was accompanied by an increase in the permeability of certain class barriers differentiable by sex.

The objectives of the paper are to identify the types of State that propose the main economic approaches that were designed after the perfect competition model and to make approximations to the size of the identified States. The analysis method is composed of two steps: selection of the key functions that are required for the implementation of economic processes and definition of the degree of State intervention in these functions. The results indicate that the minimum States are diverse and that the planning States are different. Of the approaches that base the coordination of economic processes in the market, the ultra-minimal versions of the State are those designed by the perfect competition model and Pareto welfare economics, while the most extensive exposures are those drawn by development economics, Latin American structuralism and the French approach to regulation with the welfare State, the developmental State, and the wage State, respectively.

The objectives of the present article are to reconstruct the circumstances that gave life to the labour reform in Mexico in 2019 and to analyse how this modification to the law boosts the reconfigurations of labour relations. Based on the theoretical-methodological approach of the Latin American Configurationism, the structural pressures that influenced the negotiation of the law are presented, as well as taking into account how the agents, who had particular perspectives and differentiated positions of power, influenced the definition of its contents. In order to carry out this research, the agreements and treaties that drove the reform were analysed, as well as a historical revision of the most relevant modifications to the labour law was made. This investigation permitted to conclude that even though the reform allows for new counterbalancing forces in the capital-work relation, it does not nullify the shaping of control strategies by the Estate and the employers which are intended to limit the workers’ organization abilities.

This article investigates the functions that urban gardens have in Mexico City two years after the start-up of the Food Sustainability System (SSA) integrated, among others, by the Law of Urban Gardens (LHU). To identify the different functions, multifunctionality was taken as a guiding concept, through this it is sought to identify the environmental, economic and sociocultural functions of urban gardens. A qualitative study was carried out, the information was collected through open and semi-structured interviews, as well as a review of official documents and legal instruments. Although the LHU makes visible the importance of urban gandens, in terms of the aforementioned functions, there is a clear tendency for public officials to privilege the environmental ones, while for users the sociocultural are the most relevant.

Insecurity is an intrinsic component of present societies, and it frames many daily behaviors about where to live, where to work, or with whom we relate. Such feeling of insecurity takes place in a period of rising social polarization, especially in the Latin American context. We tried to fuse both attributes by using the concept of structures of feeling, and by asking if different structures of feeling insecure are expressive of, or impinge on social stratification in Mexico. As we analyzed the National Survey on Victimization and Perception of Public Security 2018, four ways to relate to insecurity arouse: the clusters of confident, cautious, passive and evasive respondents. Such structures of feeling insecure appeared notably linked to different variables of socio-spatial stratification. These findings allowed to confirm that structures of feeling insecure is a promising concept to analyze the role that insecurity have in molding current social stratification.

Signed by the Marxist heritage and the crisis of the subject of emancipation of the seventies, the theoretical stakes of Ernesto Laclau and Slavoj Žižek are involved in a tense debate about the political subjects capable of transforming capitalism. The objective of this work is to detect the battle lines that the problem of the political subjects of emancipation raises in these two theoretical devices. Along this path, the authors trace different drifts: while Laclau develops a theory of the constitution of collective identities based on the notions of the people and populism; Žižek replaces the class category and argues that in the chain of anti-system struggles there is one (the class struggle) that over-determines the horizon of the rest.
