Book Review: López Barja de Quiroga, Pedro: Entre tiranos. La guerra civil de César, Madrid, Marcial Pons Historia, 2021, 264 pp., ISBN: 978-84-18752-00-1.

This paper analyzes three fragments of Roman stelae from the town of Revilla del Campo (Burgos). The first of them, with text and decoration, is found on one of the exterior walls of the local Church. The second of them is a profusely decorated anepigraphic fragment, from a Roman stela that has been reused as part of the façade of one of the buildings in the same town. Finally, the third of the fragments, with text and without decoration, corresponds to a stela also arranged on one of the exterior walls of the Revilla del Campo church, very close to the first fragment.

A group of Greco-Roman writers spread the news touching the existence of vast gold deposits in Asturian land and the way they could be exploited: this literary circle, which was initiated by Strabo, had an echo in later authors, the majority of them having lived in the 1st century; we have this echo both in prose (Mela, Pliny the Elder and Florus in the first decades of the following century) and poetry (Lucanus, Silius Italicus and Martial) who wrote in full coincidence with the age exploitation of the resources (Justinus, who collected the writings by Pompey Trogus at the start of the imperial age, would the last author in the list). The most outstanding author of them all is Pliny, who not only offers numerous details about the exploitation of the resources but also the number even of kilograms obtained in tasks where native work force was used; poetic allusions, on the other hand, tend to show with a degree of exaggeration the contribution of Asturian work force in mining tasks. Two references (Claudianus in his Laus Serenae and Pacatus Depranius in his Panegírico en honor de Teodosio Augusto) did ultimately mention around the year 400 the importance of this type of mining. They, however, did not refer to a contemporary reality since the exploitation of the resources had ceased two centuries earlier.
