Emeralds were one of the most appreciated precious stones in Antiquity. Indeed, there are several references about them in classical literary sources. In this paper we will offer an overview of these mentions to get data about how the extraction and trade of this gemstone worked, especially in the main extraction area in the traditionally so-called region of mons Smaragdus, in the Egyptian Eastern Desert.

This article analyzes the role and the discourses of the Ottoman Greeks in the parliament during the Young Turks’ rule between 1908 and 1918. In this way, it attempts to contribute to the knowledge about the newly established so-called constitutional order in the Ottoman Empire, the parliament and its impact over the socio-political fluctuations which mostly affected the non-Muslims. In order to do it, this work focuses on the speeches, discourses and topics of discussion which were brought to the agenda by the Ottoman Greeks in the parliament. The research is formed upon the parliamentary minutes as well as both Ottoman Turkish and Greek newspapers of the related period. The examination of these sources allows us to conclude that the efforts of the Young Turks for bringing equality, freedom and justice in fact created a reverse effect and further deepened the gap between the Greeks and the Turks; difference in the interpretations of the terms propagated by the Young Turks such as equality, freedom and Ottomanness as a uniting identity, contrary to expectations, accelerated the disintegration of the Empire.

This article aims to compare the process of creating heroes and martyrs by Carlist propagandists in two very specific situations. On the one hand, as a result of the Sanjurjada of August 1932, part of the soldiers and civilians involved were arrested and deported to the Villa Cisneros prison in Western Sahara. The newspaper El Siglo Futuro ceded its pages so that the convicts could express the humiliation and severities they suffered. On the other hand, and as a result of the events of October 1934, Carlism lost several leaders, militants and veterans of the last Carlistada who were soon elevated to the category of martyrs by decision of the secretariat of Manuel Fal Conde and the pretender Alfonso Carlos I. Consciously, and as had already been done in 1932 with some of those who fell in the military uprising of August 10, traditionalism and its publications would idealize these new martyrs without prejudice to their adherence to the Crusader dissidence.

Este artículo analiza la creación de Unión de Centro Democrático (UCD) en la isla de Menorca desde de la muerte de Franco hasta la configuración de los partidos políticos poco antes de las elecciones de 1977. A través de documentos procedentes de archivos locales y privados, la prensa de la época y los testimonios orales de diferentes protagonistas políticos del proceso menorquín, se estudia la construcción de una formación política que llegó a ser el partido mayoritario en esta circunscripción y en toda España. En el caso de Menorca, se concluye que la acción de los centristas resultó particularmente importante por su liderazgo en el impulso de la articulación de la preautonomía balear, que se asumía en la isla como algo inseparablemente unido al logro democrático. Este objetivo común de autogobierno originó un consenso unánime entre todos los sectores ideológicos, desde el centro conservador a la izquierda más progresista, de manera que fue la élite política menorquina quien comenzó marcando las directrices en el archipiélago balear sobre la institucionalización preautonómica, encauzada por la UCD de Menorca.

In early 2021, Belgian journalist and writer Évelyne Guzy published The Curse of Words, a historical account of the two branches of her Jewish family, several of whose members were deported from Mechelen to Auschwitz during the Second World War. The third part, «The Resistance Fighter,» is devoted to the heroic figure and controversial personality of her maternal grandfather Roger-David Katz. The late discovery of documents to which she has access allows her to see that in the family mythology, certain things do not «fit», mainly about the possible participation of her hero in the episode of the XXth convoy, a very controversial episode deeply rooted in the memory of the Belgian Resistance. In this essay, in the light of the studies devoted to him, we try to take stock of this affair and to understand the reasons that push Guzy to return today to this high fact that has become legendary.

The social crime as such was not typified in the criminal code of 1870, broadly the same text as that of 1850, with some variations. In any case, under such denomination there was room for a large number of criminal types that, due to their special importance and impact, were considered as special illicit. In this article we have wanted to show the evolution of the criminal typology related to the social issue during the years of gunmen in Aragon, especially in its capital, through statistical series based on the analysis and study of data from official bodies of the time. The repressive and preventive action was therefore evolving and adapting to criminal action of a social nature. Its development, evolution and impact in the Aragonese region during this period has been essential to explain the dynamics of the social issue and its problems.

The relationship between Pakistan and the United States reached its lowest point during the years of the Carter administration (1977-1981). Determined to put human rights and the struggle against nuclear proliferation at the forefront of his foreign policy, Carter immediately collided with the determination of Pakistani authorities to avoid any concessions to the new demands from Washington. Carter’s idealism sought to bury Nixon’s and Kissinger’s realism and open a new chapter in the relationship between the United States and the world. But the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan brought an abrupt change to Carter’s agenda and strengthened Islamabad’s hand in its relationship with Washington.
