The authors seek to identify the main specific features of the Moscow as the Third Rome concept (Philotheus) and its later interpretations, geopolitical as well, in modern Russia. The conducted historical and interdisciplinary research, based on the source, made it possible to propose a new vision of possible grounds for Russian foreign policy strategy. The "Third Rome" notion from the perspective of its impact on Russian foreign policy and its geopolitical dimension is addressed in the works by such authors as A.G. Dugin, N.A. Narochnitskaya, I.N. Panarin, A.N. Sakharov, Сathelinje De Busser, D. Campbell, G. Dijkink, D. Sidorov, Marshall T. Poe., D. Stremooukhoff, V.L. Tsymbursky. In turn, I.V. Artemov, A.V. Antoshchenko V.I. Galinski, E.B. Emchenko, V.V. Kozhinov, S.V. Lurie, A.V. Nazarenko, A.V. Solovyev looked into the Moscow as the Third Rome concept as both a historiosophic phenomenon, a national idea and a visualization of a fair state. As shown by A.N. Klimenko and V.I. Yurtaev, the conception, being in tune with the mood of Russian society had an impact on both the inner structure of the state and its foreign policy, which allows us to suggest that the conception of "Moscow as the Third Rome" may be seen as Russia’s informal geopolitical doctrine.

Discussions about the geopolitics of scientific knowledge usually make reference to science, universities and their learning models, yet today academic careers are rather centred on scientific publications and their impact. Hence the main purpose in this work is to analyse this change of paradigm. The articles places meditations on Southern epistemologies as a framework of reference from which to critically revise how science has traditionally defined itself and the hegemonic method for knowledge dissemination: scientific articles. To begin with, the article describes the evolution of science and how journals and impact factors have gained their current status. Next, the article ponders over a number of alternatives to the current model. It addresses the question of whether such alternatives widen the range of possibilities, or else deepen extant colonialist and elitist dynamics. Lastly, it shows why today the exploration of alternatives is linked to their potential for integration in the hegemonic system of knowledge management, while resistances offer strategies and practical frameworks for action that open up new horizons.

The question of national power remains in a situation of controversy and debate in International Relations. From the theoretical level, the problem lies in its definition, in the constitutive dimensions and the variables considered; from a technical point of view, the question is its measurement. For us, the national-international power of a State is the product of the multidimensional, dynamic and recursive combination of its capacities and is expressed in a specific historical moment of the development of the international system. Very briefly, we can say that these capacities are grouped into three major categories: 1) the material capacities, 2) the semi-material capacities, and 3) the immaterial capacities. These capacities are the constituent elements of three types of power: material power, semi-material power and immaterial power. Based on the three sets of capacities, the World Power Index is produced, which will allow measuring the national-international power of the States year by year. Starting from the theoretical postulates proposed by the main paradigms of International Relations, this document is focused on capturing a proposal for the study of national power in our days.

Early electoral research analyzed elections as whole areal ecological units such as individual states to examine how people voted. However, in the 1920s, political scientists began to place a strong emphasis on individual voter behavior, becoming increasingly reliant on survey data. Electoral geographers who utilized surveys were always troubled with this method due to the difficultly of connecting geographic voting patterns to individual respondents. The rise of positivism in the 1960s, inspired electoral geographers to re-center their focus on the voting behavior of large groups in the aggregate, not the individual. While qualitative methods still have an important role to play in electoral inquiry, the growth of geospatial technologies and increased interests in electoral cartography can yield important insights and should be utilized more in the study of elections. This paper will highlight a variety of spatial analysis techniques (i.e. cartographic methods, spatial statistics, and spatial autocorrelation) focusing on the recent electoral patterns of Hispanic voters in the United States. By providing a robust discussion of geospatial analysis methods, this paper can provide new avenues of discussion regarding geography’s role in the study elections.

The current article reviews the border studies literature produced during the first half of the 20th century. Working within the field of Political Geography, these works construct a general framework for analysis that offers conceptual tools for the study of borders as a spatial phenomenon and territorial expression of the power limits between political units at different levels (international, national, local). The article looks at descriptive works that focus on the nature and features of borders, and also at works that deal with the diverse typologies of borders, their complex functions and the impacts generated by the distinct distribution of spatial patterns. To illustrate this complexity, the second part of the article offers a systematic classification based on a range of study cases —with distinct objects and methodologies—, which reveal the dynamic and contingent nature of borders. Special attention is paid to the social, political, cultural and economic interactions between territories and peoples across borders.

The bookends of this article are analyses of two kinds of Africa-situated visual texts. It begins with a focus on Michelangelo Antonioni’s film The Passenger (1975), a movie simultaneously about a personal and cartographic drama, involving the micropolitics of the violent life of a journalist and a space with a legacy of colonial violence, the Africa country of Chad. It ends with a focus on the photography of Santu Mofokeng, which expresses a community of sense among Black citizens in post-Apartheid South Africa.
