The variations in the translation are the result of the measures adopted by the translator, which reveal the history, the socio-political environment and the culture of the host country. (Álvarez and Vidal, 1996, p. 5) This paper studies the Chinese versions of The Tragic Sense of Life on the basis of the mechanism of the cultural filters of the Variation Theory. After the introduction and the theoretical framework, the analysis is organized at three levels: the social context, the linguistic translation and the traditional culture, in order to investigate what variations have suffered the Chinese translation of The Tragic Sense of Life, the possible reasons as well as the strategies of the translator. Research on collaborative translation has expanded in recent years, with a variety of terms such as community or volunteer translation being used to refer to these practices. This article focuses on the Traction project as an instance of artistic co-creation between professionals and non-professionals in opera, and it suggests that the Traction approach could be usefully utilised in the context of audiovisual translation and media accessibility. After an introduction to the challenges of 21st century opera and their quest for new audiences, the article discusses the concept of artistic co-creation. It also presents how opera co-creation is being assessed in Traction. The co-creation process and its evaluation are then related to translation and accessibility to propose artistic co-creation as a new approach to collaborative practices which can benefit both professionals and non-professionals. The appearance of covid-19 in 2020 triggered disinformation in all its forms and gave birth to new conspiracy theories spread by different journalistic organizations, among which Global Research. This study analyzes the role of translation in the production and dissemination of journalistic disinformation. To do this, we have analyzed a corpus of articles related to covid-19 translated from March to December 2020 in Globalización, the Spanish edition of Global Research. During the analyzed period, the translation contributed to the dissemination of conspiracy theories elaborated to influence the opinion of Spanish-speaking audiences. Combining the comparative content analysis with framing theory, the study shows that the articles translated in Globalización favoured specific frames for their dissemination, coinciding with the conspiracy theories about the pandemic disseminated on the web in English. The analysis and description of these frames make it possible to detect the discourses that constitute the ideological agenda of this journalistic organization and analyze how the translation acted on that agenda.

This article is based on a consideration of the audiovisual text as a system in which different signifying codes converge, giving it a multimodal nature. Studies on the nature of the audiovisual text have addressed a multitude of aspects to date, although there are still concepts to be explained within the audiovisual paradigm. One such aspect has to do with varieties of language, specifically with the notion of sociolect. After a review of the literature, fragments of television sitcoms will be analysed to observe the possible audiovisual nature of the given sociolect. Specifically, it will be illustrated how language levels, slang, and scientific-technical language deal with audiovisual humour. The idea will be fostered that in this type of text, sociolects go beyond the linguistic scope and connect with the aural and visual dimensions. Accordingly, phenomena such as humour can be constructed thanks to elements that surpass a purely linguistic conception of sociolects. One of the major challenges in English>Arabic simultaneous interpreting (SI) is the handling of structural asymmetry between subject-verb-object (SVO) English and the verb-subject-object (VSO) structure in Modern Standard Arabic (henceforth Arabic). In Arabic, a VSO word order is dominant although a nominal clause with several variations is also available, including a marked SVO structure with a preverbal subject followed by a verbal predicate (VPr.) functioning as its khabar (rheme/comment). This paper reports on an empirical study of the handling of structural asymmetry between English SVO and Arabic VSO structures in English>Arabic SI. The study uses a parallel corpus consisting of the transcription of 10 multiple Arabic SI versions of three political English speeches. We hypothesize that the Arabic simultaneous interpreters are more likely to use the English-mimicking SVO structure since it is easier to process and requires less cognitive load on their memory. The results of our corpus-based analysis indicate that the marked SVO structure was used more frequently than the unmarked VSO structure. These results lead to the conclusion that the use of the SVO clause is a feature of English>Arabic SI. We also conclude that the Arabic simultaneous interpreters were effectively engaged in «form-based processing» by opting for the structure that has the closest match to English SVO structures as a tactic to cope with syntactic asymmetry. Our conclusions lend support to the «language-pair specificity» hypothesis since the lack of need for restructuring is only available in SI between language pairs with similar or flexible structures.  Keywords: Language-pair specificity, Syntactic asymmetry, VSO-SVO ratio, Simultaneous interpreting, Corpus analysis

Revolting Rhymes (1982) by Roald Dahl is an atypical work of children’s literature in which the Welsh writer updated and rewrote six traditional folk tales in both form and content. This paper aims to evince the postmodern features of Revolting Ryhmes and the way in which they contribute to reach the communicative purpose of the literary work. The second objective of this work is to analyse if two of the most significant postmodern features (the cultural update and the variety of language registers) are also present in the Spanish and French translations. To do so, two descriptive and contrastive translation studies were carried out to analyse the translation of those features in the target texts in French and Spanish based on the proposal of translation techniques of Molina and Hurtado (2002). Nowadays, the role of the translator project manager is still quite unknown by the most part of the graduates from the Translation and Interpreting degree in Spain. However, owing to the peak of the field and to the considerable volume of translations within the translation market, this role is becoming even more necessary. For this reason, working as a project manager turns out to be one of the most demanding positions within the market, even though their responsibilities and competences are sometimes still unknown for the new generations of translators. This could be the result of the existing limitation of time and ETCS credits in which the current curricula of the Translation & Interpreting degree are framed in Spain. Consequently, the training over translation project management go sometimes unnoticed. This paper presents the results of a survey carried out among 41 graduates from the above-mentioned degree who work or have worked as a project manager to determine to what extent they have the necessary competences as well as the knowledge to do so. Finally, the current offer of this issue within the Translation & Interpreting degree as well as in the postgraduate studies in the Spanish universities is analysed to determine whether the lack of this preparation, were it to exist, could be supplied afterwards. Establishing a code of ethics is a requirement an occupation must meet to become a full-fledged profession. In healthcare interpreting, several professional associations have published their own codes. Students are introduced to these codes in the classroom, but when they access the profession they often face ethical dilemmas that may overlap with their professional obligations. This paper explores a series of ethical dilemmas faced by students that first encounter the workplace as part of an internship programme. Drawing on participant observation and post-encounter interviews, we identify ethical dilemmas, describe the interns’ behaviour, and illustrate the rationale behind their choices. This allows us to isolate factors that hinder participants from strict adherence to codes of ethics (i.e., the theory-practice gap, contextual restrictions, and human emotion). In the light of results obtained, we encourage trainers and interpreters to develop critical ethical thinking in different healthcare scenarios to facilitate assessing the consequences of (not) following a code of ethics.
