The institutional centrality of the army helps us understand the Nation-State buildingprocess in nineteenth century Latin America. This text addresses its institutionalizationprocess through liberal-republican government policies, aimed at turning it into anobedient and non-deliberative entity, stripped of its capacity for rebellion, which wouldbe ceded to civil initiative. This analysis of the military in terms of armed citizenshipis projected in a little examined historical decade such as the Bolivian 1840s; it is donewith the aim of highlighting the capacity for political and social transformation of legislation, through the study of Bolivia’s post-Confederate restoration.

This article offers a new perspective on the study of railways: the one dictated by EnvironmentalHistory. For this study, our attention was focused on analysing the impacton the landscape, and the natural obstacles encountered by those who worked on theinstallation of the Talcahuano-Chillán branch line (1869-1874). We also identify theperceptions about new steam technologies. We postulate that, as this is the first branchbuilt in the Concepción area, its impact on the landscape was important, both from thevisual and from the physical transformation of the habitat itself. The natural difficultiesthat implied delays in the final delivery of the works are also verified, while others were the cause of accidents due to the terrain on which this branch line was built. Finally, weshow the perceptions that the inhabitants of the area, who ended up living next to thenew railway route, had on the matter. The main sources of information were contemporarypress documents from Concepción.

In the first three decades of the twentieth century there was a growing public interest inthe living conditions of lower-class children in Chile. Official and mass media reportedon and applauded the setting-up of new institutions devoted to reforming those whocommitted crimes or used the streets as their space for working, getting about and socializing.Based on the analysis of representations of delinquent children published bythe press, the Boletín de la Policía de Santiago and the Sucesos magazine, this articlediscusses that the strategies to reform the lives of lower-class children, were to eliminatevagrancy and to adopt work ethics. In the context of the “cuestión social y política”,both goals conveyed the association of poverty with crime, which was a common viewamong the ruling classes.

This article analyzes how the Peruvian doctors Carlos Enrique Paz Soldán and Juan B.Lastres were intermediaries in the circulation, transfer and adaptation of the knowledgeproduced by historians of medicine from Perú, through the United States and Europe. These efforts were part of the conviction that medical humanism would train physicianswith empathy for their patients and that past Peruvian medical practices had to be partof universal history. This allowed Peruvians to participate, at least for some time, in themedical history international network.

This work analyzes not only the use of Classical antiquity sources present in American chronicles, especially those dedicated to the Mexican conquest, but also the appearance of a series of military aphorisms, that at its core were a show of a military ideology typically found during the transition between the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. This confirms how the figure of Hernán Cortés resembles the other great generals from the Classical world; all models of the “perfect general” and, at the same time, how he is ennobled since his conquest is considered unparalleled.
