Resumen
This article analyses the emergence and development of the Cátedra de Lengua General in Charcas between 1583 and 1771. Initially, this colonial institution was part of an overall project of ecclesiastical reform aimed at strengthening the training of the clergy in native languages, controlling entry to the curates and doctrines and safeguarding the Royal Patronage. In the Audiencia de Charcas, this perspective was taken up again, but, in the medium term, this institution was co-opted by the Jesuits who ran it until the expulsion of the Society. The Cátedra trained clerics in Aymara and Quichua, which became the languages examined in the competitive examinations for curateships, although the learning of particular or mother tongues was also recommended for pastoral ministry. The expulsion of the Jesuits, the Castilianisation programme and the reform of the San Francisco Xavier University led to the formal elimination of the Cátedra de Lengua General.

Resumen
Alan Cameron’s translation and interpretation of Sidonius, Ep. 8.3.1 inc. are fast approaching the status of orthodoxy, partly through their endorsement by Van Hoof and Van Nuffelen. Yet not only does fresh scrutiny of the Latin combined with what those three scholars emphatically lacked, viz. familiarity with Sidonius, provide ample food for discontent; the intemperate verbiage the bishop is saddled with remains scarcely accounted for by their exegesis. It should therefore be assigned to scribal corruption. For the first time, energetic steps are taken to clear up both thought and wording in conformity with Sidonius’ manner.

Resumen
Cicero’s quotation (at Rep. 1. 30) of Ennius scen. 82 TrRF (= XCV, lines 185-187 Joc.) needs some conjectural surgery to become more intelligible and hopefully a more memorable quote: I propose sint instead of sit; obseruationes instead of obseruationis; ante pedes quod est non spectant instead of quod est ante pedes nemo spectat.
