Discarded ichthyofauna associated to unregulated artisanal shrimp fishery in the Mar Muerto coastal lagoon, Gulf of Tehuantepec, Mexico, was characterized. Shrimp catches were sampled from October 2017 to January 2018 with fixed cod-end nets. In this study, discard averaged 64.2 ± 15.3% of the total biomass captured, while fish amounted to 51% to 79.5% of this discard, with an estimated general ichthyofauna/shrimp ratio of 1.89: 1 kg. No relationship was found between shrimp catch and discard ichthyofauna biomass. High values of diversity are recorded in November and December due to a greater presence of marine organisms. It was shown that cod-end net fishing potentially affects at least 73 fish species, which, according to their average size and species (9.9 ± 9 cm, standard length), may be juvenile and sub-adult individuals. The families best represented in the fish list were Carangidae, Ophichthidae, and Gerreidae. Although a relatively high richness is reported in the discard, only 4 species were dominant. Fifteen new records of fish were added to the known ichthyofauna in the local and regional context. Further characterizations on by-catch and discards are necessary to propose management actions and reduction of the fishing impact.

The purpose of the paper was to determine the incidence of the type of diet on survival and ecdysis in cultured blunt-tooth swimming crab (Callinectes bocourti) to obtain soft crab as alternative fish production in the Colombian Caribbean. Two experiments were conducted: 1. fresh fish / fresh fish + Ca+ and 2. fresh fish / shrimp concentrated feed (34% protein). In 4 independent recirculation modules, each with 4 aquariums articulated to biological filters, a specimen/aquarium was planted (64 crabs per test), and 3 series were conducted of 45 days each. In experiment 1, a total of 378 specimens survived; 203 (53.7%) had the fresh fish diet, while 175 (46.3%) were fed fresh fish + Ca+. In experiment 2, a total of 293 (21.8%) specimens survived; 180 (61.4%) consumed fresh fish and 113 (38.6%) shrimp feed.  There is no relationship between diet and ecdysis in experiment 1, while there is relationship between sex (female) and ecdysis in experiment 2. It is concluded that C. bocourti is a species with crop management difficulties, and survival does not depend on diet. Sex (female) is a variable to consider in the ecdysis of C. bocourti since females require more energy for the maturation process. Adding Ca+ to natural food has no greater implications in ecdysis.  There may be a stronger relationship with environmental variables and hormonal processes than with the Ca+ intake.

Caño Negro Wildlife Mixed Refuge is located between the counties of Guatuso and Los Chiles in Alajuela, Costa Rica. This wetland has an abundant Pleco fish invasion that damages the native ecosystem, which causes socioeconomic consequences to its citizens. This research objective is to evaluate the technical and financial feasibility of an alternative invasive species use for economic exploitation from an academic perspective. Surveys, secondary data analysis, fieldwork, and expert interview research strategies were applied. It was determined that the most feasible alternative is the production of fish flour for bovine animals fattening. The project has a strong technical and financial justification that supports its feasibility; and the financial study reveals an internal rate of return of 2%, as well as, present value of income ¢ 35 729 676, in addition to the employment. However, the legal component slows its implementation in the short term hence this practice is only authorized in continental waters. This type of fishing is only allowed when done with fishing rods or ropes, but cannot be caught with these; therefore, the current law needs a revision. This research study built a baseline methodology for future profitable projects evaluation analysis aiming to generate economic exploitation of diverse flora and fauna species whose populations need to be controlled due to its negative effect on local ecosystems.

The chain catshark, Scyliorhinus retifer, is an oviparous demersal species from the northwestern Atlantic. The southern limit of distribution of this species is not clearly established. In the Gulf of Mexico, most of its records correspond to the northeastern area and are sporadic. The presence of the species and its morphometry is reported here based on two mature male specimens, 518 and 527 mm in total length, captured on the southwestern coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) or Rendu Osler Weber syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder that leads to abnormal blood vessels formation and manifests as telangiectases and arteriovenous malformations in the skin and internal organs. 72-year-old female patient with previous medical history of hypertension, iron deficiency anemia, and pulmonary hypertension in treatment. She was referred to dermatology for the presence of asymptomatic face and hands lesions. She reported only 4 epistaxis events throughout her life, and had no family history of dermatological pathologies. The examination showed multiple erythematous-violet macules that blanched when pressed upon, some conformed by grouped telangiectases, located on malar region, forehead, tongue and palms. Hepatic anomalies were excluded, but the upper endoscopy and colonoscopy found vascular lesions in stomach and duodenum. With this background, the diagnosis of HHT was confirmed. HHT is a clinical diagnosis based on Curaçao criteria: epistaxis, telangiectases, visceral lesions and family history. From a dermatological point of view, it presents with telangiectases in palms, fingers, lips and tongue. Although epistaxis or other vascular malformations may be most disabling or dangerous than skin lesions, extranasal telangiectases may be more important for the patient, leading him to a dermatologist consult. Dermatologists should have HHT in consideration, despite its low reported incidence, due to its potential complications. Treatment is only palliative, with no consensus on the best management option. It is essential to promote long-term control of the disease.

Vitiligo is a chronic, recurrent pathology, difficult to treat. The primary goal of treatment is to induce repigmentation, however, in extensive cases refractory to treatment depigmentation of surrounding skin may be performed to correct the cosmetic misbalance. To date the only depigmenting treatment for vitiligo approved by the FDA is the hydroquinone monobenzyl ether (monobenzone). We report the case of a patient with extensive vitiligo refractory to treatment managed with monobenzone. The result was successful for a long time, with partial relapse when the drug was discontinued. The relapse ended with the restart of the monobenzone. No new relapse seen with maintenance treatment 3 times a week. Monobenzone induces acromy due to melanocyte necrosis. To achieve depigmentation, it is used 1 to 2 times a day for 6 to 12 months. In adequately selected patients, it is a valid alternative for the management of vitiligo. A successful case of monobenzone depigmentation in dyschromia due to extensive vitiligo. Patient currently very satisfied with the results.

Nilotinib is a highly selective inhibitor of BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase. It is used as a treatment for chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). Cutaneous reactions are one of the most common non-hematologic reported adverse effects. The present article documents the case of a 17-year-old female patient diagnosed with CML. She was treated with nilotinib for 5 months and developed a keratosis pilaris-like reaction. The patient was treated with general measures, topical 15%-urea and antihistamines with improvement and cessation of pruritus. It is imperative to recognize the cutaneous adverse effects associated with the use of new oncologic treatments such as nilotinib.

Ashy dermatosis is an infrequent disorder of pigmentation, which predominantly occurs in darkly pigmented individuals, specially in central americans. The lesions consist of bluish-gray hyperpigmented patches mainly located on the face, trunk and arms. Its main differential diagnosis must be raised with three idiopatic pigmentary disorders: erythema dyschromicum perstans, idiopatic eruptive macular pigmentation and lichen planus pigmentosus. It has been widely accepted that erythema dischromicum perstans is the same disease, but with a transient erythematous border. Idiopatic eruptive macular pigmentation is clinically similar but without an interfase dermatitis at histopathologic studies, only showing increased pigmentation of the basal layer and pigmentary incontinence and many melanophages in the dermis. Finally, lichen planus pigmentosus must be considered as a pigmented variant of lichen planus.
